Visual novel publishing company Visual Art's has opened an official website for an anime adaptation of Planetarian: Chiisana Hoshi no Yume, a "kinetic novel" originally published by its Key label in 2004.

David Production is producing the Planetarian anime for release later in 2016. A promotional video was released on Friday as part of April Fools' Day celebrations by Visual Art's. The video features narration by Daisuke Ono, who voices the protagonist in the visual novel.

Further information on the anime adaptation will be announced at an event in Akihabara Radio Kaikan, which will also be streamed on a Niconico Live, on April 15. Sekai Project released an English translation of the Planetarian visual novel in 2014. It is also available on the Steam digital distribution platform.

Synopsis
It is thirty years after the failure of the Space Colonization Program. Humanity is nearly extinct. A perpetual and deadly Rain falls on the Earth. Men known as "Junkers" plunder goods and artifacts from the ruins of civilization. One such Junker sneaks alone into the most dangerous of all ruins—a "Sarcophagus City." In the center of this dead city, he discovers a pre-War planetarium. And as he enters he is greeted by Hoshino Yumemi, a companion robot. Without a single shred of doubt, she assumes he is the first customer she's had in 30 years. She attempts to show him the stars at once, but the planetarium projector is broken. Unable to make heads or tails of her conversation, he ends up agreeing to try and repair the projector... (Source: Steam)

Yeah since I've heard people said that it can fit in a movie. A movie would look better than a TV series (most of the time).

The video features narration by Daisuke Ono, who voices the protagonist in the visual novel.
I don't think the MC is voiced in the VN itself, he's voiced in some CD dramas that came afterwards, not that it matters much.

This is great news, not quite the Shinkai production I dreamt about while playing and David Productions... I'm not sure there, but I'm glad it's getting an anime anyway. Kinda random though, honestly didn't think this would ever happen, and they have another VN coming up too, wonder if that'll get an anime as well eventually.

Ahhhhh YEEESSSSS, I never thought that this would be the April 1st announcement they were advertising!! FUCKING FINALLY KEY!!

Yeah, a movie would be perfect, or a 2 pt OVA. DavidPro is surprising though, but no complaints.

Oh i remember this one...i read the synopsis as well about this game a while ago and i found it truly fascinating and i was actually hoping there would have been an anime adaptation.

However is the for certain true? as since todays is April fools day i am wary of everything that is announced today. Can u freakin blame me.

But if it is...would work better as an Ova, Movie or Tv series ?

Planetarian practically begs for a movie adaptation. An OVA series would be fine too, but please let it not be a 13 episode anime.

KEY has a history of making REAL announcements on April 1st, so it's real.

Wouldn't work as a TV series, it's a about a 3hr VN.

Ok ok ... i do not watch a lot of key anime so i am not used to there announcements procedures...but this i am very interested in....So yeah i guess a movie would probably be the best approach for it. either way im excited for it.

If people hoping for it to be an OVA series or a movie, then that only means that it is quite short but solid. Who knows if that will be the same if turned into anime but David Production seems to enjoy working on those that can be classified as "classic" so this might be something to look forward to.

Utsuge visual novels are not my cup of tea, but the setting looks interesting, maybe I'll watch if they make a movie with a good staff behind it.

If you are going to make an anime of Planetarian, then it's pretty much a movie or nothing. It's a short VN, like 3-4 hours playtime tops

I mean I guess you could make some weird 3-4 ep OVA series or something as well but that sounds kind of awkward

Just one look at that cover art tells me this is just another Key VN adaptation with horrible character designs and a somewhat interesting premise which turns out to be shit.
Won't be surprised if it's April Fool's though, this VN is super old.

Given how short the "kinetic novel" is supposed to be, a movie is probably the best way to do this. Either way, I knew that there was no way they'd put such effort into that PV for an April Fools' joke. It's Key, so I'm definitely going to watch it whatever form it's in.

Also, am I right in saying that this and Rewrite will mean that all the main Key VNs (excluding Tomoyo After and Kud Wafter) have been adapted into animes other than Harmonia or whatever it was called that they announced at some point last year?

A movie would suffice, since this VN is pretty short. Can't see it in TV form, maybe a shorter TV form, but rather have a movie. Pretty exciting news. 2016 is looking even better now. Hope to hear more about it soon, and the PV looks nice. Wonder if their upcoming Harmonia VN will get an adaptation in the future. Most likely will~

Okay. Just saw who made the VN. No longer interested lol, as it will be filled with UGUUUUS and hair being blown by the wind and fake feels.

David Production is a pretty dank animation studio. Some of the drawings and animation in JoJo series have been pretty over the top.

Hmm... Well, a normal TV anime of 12 eps is about 4,4 hours together (without OP/ED calculated - 22 min.*12= 264/60 min.), and the original (VN) is really just few hours long... Hmm, well if they some fillers adding, then this can quiet as TV anime go - otherwise it's more likely a movie format.

But let's see, what in the upcoming weeks still of news give out will...^_^
