I would place Akumetsu on the other side of the spectrum if Clannad is on the other extreme. Clannad was emotional porn. Akumetsu is just a teenager fapping his ego about how he knows "how corrupt and wrong" the world is. Essentially, the guy is a commie who thinks that capitalism is a bad thing and that all girls are too stupid to protect themselves and need white knights/males to protect them. Notice how his best friend is portrayed as a dependent rather than an independents that are similar to Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell or even Holo from Spice and Wolf.

That's okay and all to think that way but really the most important thing is what your thoughts are after reading the manga. Even if you hated the premise i'm sure it still stoked some kind of reaction within you with regards to what is indeed the best method to run a government and all that. If you merely just dismiss it as 'anarchist fapping', 'anti-feminism' and 'commie rubbish' then you're doing what Akumetsu is against; standing by one side and merely spouting things without providing any framework for any proper discussion of the themes within the story itself. No matter how bad you think the story is you can't resort to that sort of thought-cancelling cliche.

So rather than just spouting of opinions like that, its better to use the manga as a springboard to voice your opinions about the bigger picture, the system in general

1. If you were given that kind of power what would you honestly do with it?
2. Without that kind of power what do you think should be done to eliminate the evils inherent in the system?
3. Do you think that killing is ever justifiable if the cause is just?

Also even if you hate the way its presented you still have to concede that at the very least it draws attention to certain aspects of the Japanese society that may be flawed (e.g. the road construction, the pension, the HIV blood transfusion thing).

4. If a work has valid social critiques do you think that the weakness of presentation (e.g. your 'anti-feminism' accusations) undermine the quality of the argument?
5. Do you think that immediately labeling him a 'commie' is a result of the perpetuation of unconscious post-coldwar sentiments or do you have a real bone to pick with the idea of Marxism in general? (in extension do you think your reasons for hating Communism are well established or do you think that all this while you've been secretly influenced by certain post-coldwar generalizations?)
6. Why does a mangaka who combines valid social critiques with a cynical fun and violent style immediately become labelled a 'teenager fapping his ego'? Even if he is a 'teenager fapping his ego' does it really matter if the style is successful at drawing a huge audience and enlightening them about the various social issues?
7. Do you think its justifiable to place a value judgment on a person merely because you do not like his work? (The standard answer is "yes its my own opinion and I have a right to it etc....". Even if you do have the legal right to it do you yourself think its MORALLY right to judge someone in such a manner?)

It's over.

Well think about it, if need be Shiina can bring back a new generation of Shou. I am sure there is enough material to clone him and she has all his memories.

A bit of a naive understanding of how politics and modern economics works, but nevertheless, a darn good read, specially the last volume which really raises the stakes a notch.

I was very pleased that he didn't end up as a hypocrite and stuck to what he said to the end.

This manga was introduced to me in my early college days, after reading it a bit, and forgetting about it, twice, I've finally given it a third attempt and found that it takes a certain mind set to pick this up and read it, like with many other manga, some can't be read when you're feeling lazy, depressed, overjoyed, or emotional, otherwise you'll view it differently than with a neutral mindset.

Finally being able to sit down and read this fully gave me a fun ride, the character was consistent and unwavering in his beliefs, absolutely up front about his intentions with no trace of hypocrisy without an air of youthful optimism the likes of which you'd find in a typical "cookie-cutter" shonen hero.

Should I compare him to anyone, I'd say he was more akin to a Loony Tunes character, what with his variety of costumes, roles, and acting, as well as his insane challenges, stages and props. Which in the end, should you allow yourself to let go and enjoy the ride, gives you a fun read.

If I had to choose something to criticize when it comes to Akumetsu, I'd have to say that the politician hunt went too long, seeing corrupt official after corrupt official being given the same speech over and over took its toll on me as a reader.

On a side note, if these corrupt officials knew that they were being hunted down, saw others get killed despite their security, and recognized that Akumetsu likes to get close to his victims, why did hardly any of them, if not none of them, decide to carry a weapon on themselves? A knife, a gun, an ice pick, anything really. You could chalk it up to "Insane arrogance", but at some point, arrogance gives way to reason, especially when self preservation takes over.

Never the less, if you read Death Note, and wanted Kira to be a bit more of a showman/Comedian, this is the manga for you.

I got really bored with those 'kill the politicians' arcs, but this final arc was amazing. At least his death was more heroic than Kira, and it didn't feel like it was forced or anything. Great read.

Note: It took me a long time to realize that the Shou who was with Shiina was different with the one who was with Aya. I wonder why I didn't notice it earlier.

One thing I wonder about the ending: Does Shiina's clone have Shou's memories too?

Is this even considered a happy ending? Ending felt blend imo with the time skip. I'm not sure what to think of the manga overall as some of the themes felt a bit over saturated. I agree that the politician arcs had a bit too much stuff going on and at times flowed a bit weak. The last arc turned out to be fairly decent though except the ending somewhat.

Well, first of all, I am surprised that there are such wrong recommendations to this manga...

Seriously, death note? I mean, if anything, only the moral of the story is close to being same, and even then, it gets rather different the more it goes on.

Instead, if anything, I would recommend people to look up the Sanctuary manga, if you want something interesting based on politics. It doesn't involve supernatural elements, but it still shows the corrupt nature of politics, although in albeit different manner.

With that over with - let's get to the manga itself:
First of all, I had feelings this will get too childish from the start up, but my expectations were never that wrong. Instead we are introduced to a rather heavy political speeches in a lot of chapters, and it's realy interesting to read the opinions of different kind of people onto the subject.

There are cons too, of course - the protagonist, Shou, is rather random.. what I mean is - sometimes he acts rather stupidly, sometimes it feels like he knows everything.. and I am not talking about the school version of him, I am talking about 'Akumetsu' version of him - it felt like his knowledge of some political matters is really warying rather randomly.

Throwing that aside - manga suffered from pacing as well. Based on the 30day calender - it realy felt unreal, even considering the amount of clones to do the jobs simultaneously, how long the first week lasted... IIRC it was over half the manga being 7 or a little over that days worth of stories.
Instead, the last two or so weeks were rather stagnant, aside of last few days.. it felt like it was a simple timeskip - like world simply ceased to exist for a few days, with no one realy taking any action.

What it has done good though, is showing us the moral of the story and ending the story in a rather realistic, non happy go lucky way.
There were a few small mess ups during the ending, but I will close my eyes on them, since I overall enjoyed it neitherless.

I was struggling on putting and 8 or 9 for it. Overall I would easily go with an 8, but a satisfying ending is rather rare, so I sticked with 9.. Last time I found the ending so satisfying was with the manga called 'Ten' I think.. and even for that manga - you had to read more than a single series to fully enjoy it.
There were decent endings in between, but Akumetsu's ending realy felt like it suits both the series, genre and moral.

This realy desrves to be read until end, and if one doesn't read to the end - they better not even bother starting, the beginning wasn't realy all that promising, anyway, but the slow build up realy did pay off in this case. Too many things revealed too early, maybe, but still enjoyable enough.

Great conclusion to an epic fight.
In the end, no matter how much he fought - and died - Shu didn't change anything although he was able to get his message across to the people.
Typical but realistic.
Shu even managed to get his message across the reader of this manga
which is always a plus on my book.
I'd give it an 8/10

Pfft. Everyone's death is more heroic than Kira's.

An amusing manga. Beginning was kind of difficult to slug through but it quickly picked up its pace.
Liked it overall.

Minister is yet another clone, but the oldest one. That is why he doesn't have memories of Akumetsus we followed trough manga. That is why he asks the girl to tell him about Should... He is the mastermind.

With the power he had, he could have cured Japan of it's evil, with a lasting effect. In an ordinary situation, self-sacrifice is heroic and deserves praise, but he could have just kept on killing scumbags until the world was a better place.

What a great ride.

Shou is the GOAT.

Also, the ending was perfect. Because you cannot change society without literally changing everyone's mind, but in the end Akumetsu pretty much pulled a Batman, making people have more fear or consciousness over their acts, and that's what he wanted.

Kind of funny reading this because at the time of this post, Japan's national debt is around 9.2 trillion USD.

At any rate, this was a fun read but the ending is pretty lame. Yeah, yeah its "realistic" or whatever but the entire manga until this point is just pure wish fulfilment aimed at removing evil and corruption, so the ending just seems rushed and poorly thought out in comparison to the rest of the manga. Don't get me wrong, the ending isn't 100 % terrible because I do think very little would've changed in Japan's political or social structure in response to the things that Akumetsu did but still the final conflict was just pretty underwhelming.
