Wow, am I tweaking out because it's 6:00am, or did Miaka just cleave an island in half and clear out a tropical storm with one swing of Hotohori's sword?

Why does she need six holy protectors to make this journey again? :P

That's about the dumbest thing someone can do.
Fighting electricity with a sword in the middle of a thunder storm.

The sword provides as a lightnight rod, so it wouldn't harm her.

It was nice to find out about Nuriko's past. Although I find it to be a bit of a strange reason for him to act like a woman.

That was pretty epic. Way to go Miaka! Love it when the girl who is always being rescued turns out to be the one to rescue everyone else.

Why do I remember Gintoki at times like this lol.. When the man said he brought the elder "choro", I remembered that scene in Gintama when he's left with nothing but the choro to use in the combat lol.

It was acceptable in the 90s to have zero clue about trans people. In fairness, I'd never heard the word "newhalf" before this episode (and I hope to heaven that it isn't an offensive term for a trans person). Nuriko's believable, awesome and not just a series of bad jokes.

I would agree. I think that post I made was more of an instant reaction to the episode (when I was 14) than what I ended up thinking in the long run. If I remember correctly, this is the episode where we find out that Nuriko takes on that feminine role because of grief for his lost sister, right? I still think it's a touching story and I don't think it's that offensive, especially considering the time when the series was created. I think I found it a strange explanation at first, but it doesn't bother me now and it certainly didn't bother me for long. As the series goes on, and in general, in some ways I think Nuriko's character is ahead of that time.

Totally. And I don't think there was any intent to offend, either by the show or anyone in this thread. 8-)

So the previous miko, who successfully summoned the beast-god, was the daughter of that professor (doctor?) who found the book?
If so, it seems she died in the process and that's why her father killed himself.

this episode had a lot to love. from miaka’s bravery finally paying off to some more of learning more about the show’s mythos. i so much love that miaka finally got to do something on her own. hotohori needs to get a new sword.

nuriko’s backstory is really interesting. i like what it adds to their character. it doesn’t feel fair to call out a 90s show for nonPC tans representation but i was really empathizing with nuriko as a woman. i also liked that she and miaka could have a feminine friendship. but still it’s a really compelling backstory and adds depth to nuriko’s character.

This is so dumb. They didn't need to explain it. Also. could the show make up its damn mind?

Well, it's a "magical" sword, so all of your criticisms are invalid ;)
