Given that this movie is an alternative version of the anime, can I watch it without too much trouble?

Technically is a messed up prequel.
But it's fully enjoyable and watchable without prior knowledge of the T.V show.
In fact some people have hated it because they watched the show first, and so much was changed.

Its not a prequel at all. Its a completely different anime besides most characters returning. Alternate retelling.

Yes it is.
It's not a very GOOD prequel but a prequel non the less.

It's about how humans left the earth.
How the corellians came to earth.
How shit happened...ect ect.
Definitely not well done in the regards of a timeline.
IIRC the director wanted something that was accessible to both new fans and would reach to older fans. Clearly....it didn't jive to his vision. -laughs-
So the planet ended the way it was with the flood...that was to show the coralians taking over and forcing the humans to leave. And Holland seeing the moon carved with Eureka and Renton's name was a look into the future.

It's not a prequel.
It has nothing to do with the history of anime. They quote the anime world only when Holland says there is a universe which they can go to achieve your dreams.

Just to say that is another parallel universe. And this is what the film is... another universe.
