Shinkai's works are usually bittersweet towards the end, adding a sense of transience to the feelings the main characters have at their closest. The transience then, similar to how a cherry blossom tree only blooms for a short time, makes the feelings more beautiful. |

I'm not sure if it's because he's become less bitter about love, or because he's aiming for a more mainstream audience. |
