Well, she was drifting somewhere, it might've been inside her mech as well as the space tho, as it appeared that she was floating inside the mech from the start.

At least that's how I see it

Yes, she died. The scene was done in a way that makes the viewer stare at the ceiling for minutes thinking about that ending.

It may be ambiguous in the film but somewhat good news is that in the source material, he joins the rescue team and I believe they finally meet up.

I think the point was precisely to make it ambiguous, leaving an open ending :o

That would be a more satisfying ending

Heartwarming yes, but I think that would betray the sentimentality of the movie a bit. Shinkai's works are usually bittersweet towards the end, adding a sense of transience to the feelings the main characters have at their closest. The transience then, similar to how a cherry blossom tree only blooms for a short time, makes the feelings more beautiful.

yeah but in Kimi no na wa they met up and it was his biggest movie

Maybe the guy has to lighten up the endings now

Yep, his endings have recently been getting less depressing. I'm not sure if it's because he's become less bitter about love, or because he's aiming for a more mainstream audience.
