They had travelled through the bitter lands for the past three days before eventually reaching the small town which had sent in the request, it was a request that had been kept hidden from Cain, and still he didn’t know what he was there for, yet at least. Night had slowly drifted in once again, with the days being full of damp mist, and the night being cold enough to turn water into ice, such was the harshness of the winter weather. Still, both had made it across the lands without trouble, they had become used to the land having grown up on it or around it, although there rations were running low. They had just about run out, and would surely need to resupply before heading back, but for now, they didn’t need to contemplate such matters.
“So have you thought about what I asked?” Jessica placed her empty rucksack down against the floor as they stood just outside of the small town, with her voice being in its usual relaxed manner. They were close after all, far closer than the normal student teacher relationship, although they weren’t lovers.
Cain had slung his empty bag over the top of his shoulder, with the residue of rain dripping down to the floor, his eyes cast over the small town in front of them. The streets were fairly empty considering it was about to become night, with most of the residents choosing the warm comfort of their homes rather than the bitterness of the outside. Glancing up towards the sky, Cain let out a sigh, the sky was clear with the moon in plain sight. It was going to be another bitter night without the clouds for cover, if they didn’t find an inn or some place in doors to stay.
“I have thought about it the past few days, and will give you an answer by the end of this mission. Now, are you going to tell me all of the details of the mission or not?” Cain fired a glance towards Jessica before stepping into the town before them, they had reached their destination, or the one on the mission briefing at least. Cain would pick the place they stayed at it didn’t matter where it was as long as it was inside and warm, a bath would be nice as well, or shower.
The first one they walked in happened to be free, or sort of since it only had one room, with one bed. It would do though, not that Cain would ever complain or bitch about sleeping with a woman. He just had to be careful or he might wake up missing something important to him, if not dead, but then he wouldn’t wake up. Paying the owner and picking the key up was easy enough and straight forward, perhaps quicker since Cain didn’t bother to exchange any pleasantries, he didn’t need to and it would only waste time. Taking a look around the room it was simple in design with only the basic facilities needed to function being contained inside, with the bed at the centre of the room it left little to no room for manoeuvring.
A small round table took up the rest of the room along with the single old rocking chair, which looked as brittle as a depilated building left to go into ruin. To their look the bed was fairly comfortable or better than sleeping on the floor outside, with the mattress still being firm enough to feel his movements, though it didn’t look like many people had slept with each other on it. If they had, then it certainly wouldn’t have been as firm as it was, not considering it hadn’t looked like the owner had replaced anything inside the room for the past several years, he hadn’t cleaned it either. The dust lingered in the air which was probably the only place left for it to cover, with everything else being covered in an inch or two of thick dust. It was disgusting.
“I am taking the shower first...so no sneaking in, okay?” Jessica sent a warning glare towards Cain before closing the bathroom door behind her. She locked it just to make sure. Not that such a basic old lock could hold out on a gentle nude, hell even the hinges on the door would probably fall off. Cain waved nonchalantly as he blew the dust from the top of the table, coughing because of his casualness as he inhaled some of the dust.
It wasn’t long before Cain had laid out the tools of his trade, with the several Kunai and blades fitting just nicely on the table. They were sharp to the point and as clean as they possibly could be, they needed to be if they were to be reliable. The black sheathe of his Katana lay idly against the wall of the room just to the left of him, he had brought along his arsenal as instructed, which lent him to believe that this was no simple mission. He hated being in the dark, not knowing was really was going on, but had become accustomed to often being placed in such situations, she wasn’t really trusting.
“You said we were after Bandits right?” Cain lent himself against the window as he looked down towards the barren streets, or at least the used to be barren streets. “Yes.” Jessica responded from inside the bathroom, with the water still running she was enjoying her relaxing shower. She couldn’t see what Cain could see, the gathered crowd of people outside their inn.
They looked to have been picking up the disposed body of several children with none of them looking to be older than 10 years old, and yet they would never get to see their next birthday. The world truly had gone too held in some place, but that was good for the Shinobi of the world. They revelled in the darker times, they were weapons after all. “It was the town people that asked us for help?” Closing the curtains inside the room, Cain lay down on the bed looking up towards the ceiling. They were high enough that the cries of the people were easier to block out, and it wasn’t like he could do anything to help the dead, yet.
“Yes, Cain the town people asked us to free them from bandits that have come in from the ocean. I haven’t lied to yet, jeez you should try trusting me more asshole.” Jessica let out a groan while staring down towards Cain, her blue eyes looking down into his much darker eyes. She only wore a short bathrobe, it was all she could find, but it did its best to hide her chest, which was no small feat. In hiding her chest, she had allowed her legs to be exposed more than she had wanted to; it wasn’t as though she could hide behind her hair. Not when it as tied up into a bun at least. “Eliminating the bandits, then?” Yes, in this world such things were common. Shinobi were tools of destruction, and this time, they had been asked to assassinate the bandits. That was putting it nicely, in reality they had been paid to slaughter the bandits. Money was money though and murder was murder, it didn’t matter who you killed, taking a bandits life was the same as taking any other.
“Mhmm...” Jessica closed her eyes as she climbed into bed, she could sleep naked without worrying about Cain. He wouldn’t take advantage of her, besides she wouldn’t sleep anyway. She couldn’t sleep knowing what they were going to do in the next day or two. They were going to bathe in the blood of their enemies, again. “Night Jessica.” Cain let out a yawn while rolling off the bed; he would take his time in the shower now that she was done. They had arrived in the town, and soon the quiet town would become a bloody battle field, the festival was soon approaching, and they couldn’t stop it. |
