Did Kou always love Futaba?

So I read the manga of ao haru ride over the summer and it never made any sense to me when it came to the question does Kou still love Futaba? So I watched the anime and i'm thinking maybe he does or maybe he doesn't. If anything he's like a light switch one moment he shows signs that he does like her and the next he doesn't and I know he liked Futaba in middle school because I've watched ahr unwritten and read it. So I'm really confused as to whether Kou never stopped loving Futaba or maybe he did but when he met her in high school again and got to know her he started to like her again? Help?
