No u are essentially right. He was a traitor initially along with the other girl that's y they had undergone very specific bugs transformations. Their power weren't exactly useful in exterminating Roaches but for survival/control so that they could get back to earth with an egg.

Terrible pacing - action is bad - you can barely see anything, because it's a fucking slide-show and has tons of panning.

This also is about the first episode - like most anime of this period, circa 2007 - 2017 - it has this weird desaturation effect + weird lighting and it makes the anime look like dogshit.

It's definitely an alright prequel, and you can appreciate getting to see what happened to the BUGS2 expedition, but there was perhaps a bit too much action going on at times.
