About: Drag

Definition

Drag typically refers to the act of cross-dressing or the clothing in which one cross-dresses, but there is also a certain, distinct kind of drag culture. 'Drag queens' are typically men dressed as women, and 'drag kings' are typically women dressed as men. However, there are also men dressed as women dressed as men ('faux king') and women dressed as men dressed as women ('faux queen'). There are also various other combinations with a variety of genders and sexual orientations. Anyone could adopt the drag style of clothing, which is often loud, flamboyant, and exaggerated. People often go by an alternate/stage name while in drag.

Drag shows & contests

Drag performances could be found in several places. RuPaul's Drag Race is a pretty popular television show that features drag performances (including fashion runway walking and lip-synch competitions). Drag shows could also be found in gay bars and on some college campuses. Performances often include witty banter from the hosts and lip-synched songs & dance by performers.

There are also drag contests and drag pageants. The San Francisco Drag King Contest is apparently considered "the biggest drag king contest in the world" (source: Wikipedia). As for drag pageants, there is Miss Continental and Miss Gay America among others.

Why do people do drag?

Often, the object is not to 'pass' as another sex but to parody. Thus, what might come to mind when you think of drag queens are overly-tall heels, dramatic hair, and attention-grabbing clothing. For drag kings, it might instead be scruffy facial hair. Drag is usually done as a hobby, as a job, or for other entertainment purposes. But the reasons for doing drag are as varied as the people doing it. Some people find that drag brings out a part of themselves that is otherwise confined by the dictation of society.

1. From Wikipedia I got "the biggest drag king contest in the world".
2. I got a chunk of this information from Association for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues in Counseling of Alabama
3. and another chunk from watching RuPaul's Drag Race.
