| As much as I respect Inio Asano as a writter, this is some major edgelord bullshit right here. It looks completely out of Midori's already established character. Cheating on Yuichi? Who knows? Maybe yes... but raping a minor? Why? Because Punpun looks like Yuichi? Because Yuichi had sort of an affair with a minor, and Midori wants to feel as "broken" as he is? I don't get it... The only sure thing is that this is going to become harder to read from now on. |

And before anyone cries "realism" and "real people aren't perfect!!" — there's a difference between realism and melodrama (what's happening here). So far, it seems the author has been more concerned with going "you thought this character was likeable and decent?? HA, gotcha, they're a piece of shit and you're an idiot for liking them!", and for me that robs the story of any punch it could have because all the characters are scummy caricatures. This isn't realism, this is misery porn. |

I will give credit where it's due: the art and flow of panels in Oyasumi Punpun are gorgeous and Asano's style is legitimately good. The writing and themes, IMO, could use some work in how they're being expressed; it's one thing to depict characters who go through struggles, it's another to throw "dark" plot points around for the sake of making things seem depressing and "deep". And the latter doesn't feel genuine. Thank you for the recommendation; I've read some other works by Asano but haven't gotten to Solanin yet. I've seen Oyasumi being praised for its realism, hence why I brought it up. |
