Aww, Yuzuru turns red at the end.
I guess she's in good company.

Shouko certainly took it much better than Yuzuru, either since she's much closer to her mother or she's really that tough.

It just might not have completely hit her yet. Or she was thinking about her sister and not letting it hit her yet. Anyway, the dad's family is nasty.

So it was their father...

Apparently there was quite a bit of prejudice/restrictions against disabled in Japan in the past. So something like this, especially in the male dominant society, shouldn't surprise me, but it seemed pretty extreme. Like getting hit by a truck as soon as the chapter starts.

What I want to know is how the mother even ended up marrying into such a family. I'm sure those beliefs would be quite obvious (extreme prejudice, karma, etc). Arranged marriage? The way the father and in-laws were looking down upon them about jobs/government aid makes it not seem so. I guess it is most likely marrying into an affluent family for a better life for her kids.

Well the cute ending was definitely needed. Yuzuru blushing like crazy c:.

The sisters look so cute when they smile ^^ Would love to see the mother smile as well.
A group picture of them smiling would warm my heart.

Now I feel bad for their mother. Their dad is such an ass. Treating Shoku as just an illness. That is just low.

Roughly about 50% of marriages end in divorce in North America after a special needs child is born. It's not that people are assholes (although Shouko's father and his family seem to be), it's the added stress and strain it puts on family relationships. In Japan, where from what I've read the stigma is greater, I can see this happening very easily.
But what a betrayal for Shouko's mom--presumably she liked this guy before they got married, but it's clear that he doesn't care enough to even put in the effort to help with paying for the extra expenses.
Please don't feed the trolls!

But he's a guy. It's already twilight And yet, it's so hot. The cicadas are crying. But... He's a guy."

The first part of this chapter broke my heart. Even more so when I know people like them exist in real life.

Hopefully Ishida can do something for them. I really want the mother to be happy again and to see her smile.

Man, these guys sure are pretty bad at cheering someone casually. But good effort. The family situation for the Nishimiya seemed pretty messed up. Even though the child has disabilities, that is still in some sense their flesh and blood. In some sense, it was probably a good thing that the girls did not grew up with these kinds of relatives. They better be paying for child support though. >-<

Wow, Shouko's father's side of the family sure is nasty. They are ashamed for being related with someone with a disability and try to pin the blame on the mother. It doesn't even matter if they believe those things, they're just looking for excuses to not take responsibility.

Shouko's maternal grandmother, on the other hand, is an absolute treasure.

Yuzuru's a great kid too.

Something I didn't like about this series in general is how extreme the characters are to a comedic degree sometimes. this chapter is a perfect representation of my issue. People don't act like this, there's zero nuance to these characters, it seems like when the mangaka wants to make an evil character she takes it to the extreme. She could have went with a simpler approach like maybe the father got tired of dealing with a child that has a disability or simply didn't like yaeko's personality and the disagreement led to a divorce. Treating shouko as if she was a product they ordered and got pissed because it didn't meet the standard is on a whole other level that it makes this seemingly sad chapter funny
