So we finally have some closure with some of the side characters. Hoshi clearly had a mental breakdown not being “gods chosen” and tried killing his classmates. (At least that was heavily implied.)

Perhaps Rahjdani’s story about the “this world” which was eerily reminiscent of their original world was Ace’s “this world?” Ace wanted to hold onto to the past of being a baseball star and his girlfriend (blonde girl) finally left him. Or maybe it was implying it was Asakaze’s “this world?” However I think it fits more with Ace’s personality. Asakaze will surely appear next episode.

God. This episode killed me inside.
Lot's of convoluted concepts and explanations, which gives me anxiety just thinking about it.

Extremely sad about Nozomi's passing. It was shocking.

I... wonder what will be the finale about.
Deep within my heart, I just want things for all of them to become normal once again.

Man, this was my favorite episode this far. And one of my favorites from this whole year. I honestly don't know what else to say.

This was deep. I stayed on the spot thinking after the credits rolled. Rajdhani is such a great character. A whole episode made of conversations and I was engrossed the whole time.

I really hope they make it :')

Wow, nobody ever went back in thousands of years? It didnt take that much... But probably it has more to do with people preferring the fictional bs in which they live now.

Overall very solid

They rode the Saturn V up to a space elevator which is connected to... not the planet they just left. Earth possibly?

Anyhow, I think a LOT of us will have to binge-watch it all again in the near future.

Haven't 3 people died at least? Nozomi, Hoshi? (who built his own electric chair) and the "twin" who used the ray gun on himself.
Anyhow, one of the best shows of all time.

Probably the best episode since episode 6.

I'm not going to pretend like I enjoy the story, but the direction of this episode was phenomenal. The insert song, the voice acting, the animation/scenery was perfect. Really cannot wait to see what they will pull off in the final episode.

I really wasn't expecting the episode to open up with a funeral. I pretty much wasn't expecting Nozomi to actually be dead. I figured she'd just drift off into a different world and eventually find her way back or be stumbled upon.

Seeing as they are putting a lot of emphasis on "anything could happen when we return home." I wouldn't be surprised if the Nozomi Compass changes back into Nozomi herself when, and if, they set foot back in the original world they came from. I can't particularly see this having a sad ending.

Guys, check the final few scenes of this episode. The compass is pointing UP in zero gravity when they're in the shuttle. A compass, as we know it, does not have a direction for UP. Hence why Nozomi was constantly reaching towards the sky and why they're traveling to space.

My love for Mizuho and Nagara skyroocketed (no pun intended) in this episode. Also the fucking GOAT RAJ coming back. Might be best side character of the year.

So did Mizuho create this world because her cats died in the real world or do we still do not have that answer yet?

I feel like there are three possibilities why the "This World" was created by Mizuho:
1. Prevent her cats from dieing
2. Help Nagara with the birds
3. Prevent Nozomi's death.

At this point option 3 is most likely but they never explain why the cats can't go back with them.

Next week will be a doozy.

Probably one of the best episodes so far imo. The whole opening bit with Nagara and Mizuho preparing a funeral service for Nozomi was pretty sad tbh. Great insert song btw. Was very fitting.

Pretty interesting in how everyone apart from Nagara and Mizuho are content with staying adrift. I suppose they've all come to terms with their lives there now and are alright with it. You'd think that after being away from their own world for so long, that if given the opportunity, they'd want to go back.

Well, I'm really hyped to see how this will all wrap up.

Wow, I didn't expect this episode to be so sad. Props to Rajdhani for being such a great support to his friends. I'm gonna miss Yamabiko and the cats. I can't imagine how hard it must be for Mizuho to say goodbye to her pets whom cared and loved her most of their life. The ED song had hit me differently this time. :'((

Rajdhani is best boy!

Mizuho saying goodbye to the kitties and Yamabiko made me tear up a bit.

There's a lot of loose ends that need to be tied up, and I don't think that can happen in this one last episode.

Did Hoshi become a serial killer? Are all of the other students on the ark dead, or just hollow? And, let's not forget oppai-sensei and her motley crew. I don't recall best boy mentioning them.

And Rajdhani's journey was 2000 years?!

I'm definitely going to have to marathon this show when all episodes have aired and pay extremely precise attention to everything.

From what I understand, Mizuho isn't the one who created a new world, but the cats were (specifically Sakura). It's mentioned that they did it to "protect her". From what is not exactly known, but they also said in previous episodes that she wasn't ready for the real word and was still like a child. Maybe her grandma died so the cats wanted to prevent her living alone? Also, episode 10 shows that Mizuho's power isn't creating new worlds, her power is giving immortality. That's why when Nagara and her both order chickens into that world, only the one she ordered comes back to life after being killed.

Found this on Youtube:

This episode is heavy. After the previous episode about "war," this one is clearly about "death."

I think the man who painted his lover was Radjhani himself. He was trapped in a world that looked horribly like his home, but he couldn't live fully in it. He fell in love, but she left him behind because he couldn't see the fake reality in front of him as real. Then he implies that the creator of that world died in a complicated way (10:00), but Radjhani also implies that he himself is already dead too (9:25 and 14:13-14:29). What he's saying is, he's lived a long and full life. He's forgetting the people he once knew, and has become irrelevant in their lives. He's completely alone. One day, no one will remember him. On that day, he will die a peaceful death.

The man who invented death at 13:19 is Asakaze. That's his face on screen. Also, on Episode 10, the principal commanded Asakaze to create "death" in that world (at Episode 10 8:50). He succeeded - he committed "suicide" in a deathless world through killing his desire (13:42), ie. reaching Buddhist enlightenment. That's how he died. Side note, but I think this could also be code for "Asakaze broke away from Aki-sensei" too, because metaphorically, Aki-sensei kind of represents his lustful desires.

And, of course, Nozomi died at the end of Ep 10. She is physically dead (15:09), but she isn't gone. Unlike Radjhani and Asakaze, whose spirits "died" but retained their physical bodies, Nozomi physically died but her compass/spirit hasn't left. She's still with Nagara and Mizuho, and she's returning with them to the real world (the floating compass at 23:32-23:35).

I think they're flirting with the idea of reincarnation in Nozomi's flashback (15:51). Nozomi tells Nagara, allegorically that is, that if they meet each other again in the next life, if he asks her to be friends again, she will not turn him down (18:20). This - reincarnation - is another way to die.

Finally, I really didn't think they'd end up returning home but it looks like it's happening. All the other clones have settled on their new lives (and deaths) in the drifting worlds, but Nagara and Mizuho got on a spaceship and are literally on a different atmosphere as everyone else now. That is a massive accomplishment. I think this represents their rejection of death - they become immortal through greatness. You will never be completely forgotten if you reach for the stars. Remember Nozomi ran off the school building and jumped for an invisible star in Episode 1 (literally reaching for the stars), but Nagara held her back? Now Nozomi's compass is helping Nagara reach the stars - the color of outer space even matches the pitch black background around their school when Nozomi first jumped.

EDIT: There are people saying the inventor of death is Hoshi, not Asakaze. That's another possibility. I think it's Asakaze for narrative continuity and personal character arc reasons (more info in the replies), but I agree it could be Hoshi too.

Another theory is the couple in the painted world is Ace and Shanghai, but I don't think this is the case. So many clues disqualify Ace and Shanghai but point to Raj - the paintings of Raj we see in this episode, the fact that the homesick world is set in India, the fact that the man started out alone.

That was a pretty solid explaination

So Nozomi is really dead...

It was really sad to see both Mizuho and Nagara cry like that.

I guess Rajdhani has grown attached to This World, so he decided to stay.

But I wonder how going to the space will help them go back to their own world.

Also killing Nozomi off just like that doesn't feel real, I feel like she might still be alive in the real world.

After that episode Iam relatively certain that the main topic of the show is Nagara and Mizuho coping with the death of Nozomi and the cats in real life. So the world they travelled are basically huge metaphors for their emotional states and how they are trying to come to terms with time going on even if loved ones die. Of course I could be totally wrong but I thin episode 12 will conclude them going on with their lives in the real world. Most of the philosophies and analogies in the other episodes also mostly deal with being able to accept the way things happen and coming to terms with the meaninglessness of life in general (Nihilism for example) and still being able to move on optimistically, at least that's what I took away from it, with how vague the show is there are probably a lot of different possible interpretations.

But her will still exists in the form of a compass. I loved Rajdhani's view on life and death, and honestly he's the best character. My man lived for 2000 years and built a frickin rocket.

Good to see Rajdhani after his 2000 year journey telling stories on moving on, I wonder if the insane inventor of death guy from his story was Hoshi because it looked like him.

Its weird realising all those students after 2 real world years passed no longer want to go to their original world except Mizuho and Nagara carrying Nozomi's will.

Am i the only one who thinks that the guy obsessed with death that "killed" himself with electric chair was War? It fits with what became of him in episode 10 - an empty husk free of any desire. But, on the other hand, the glimpse of that person's face didn't look like what we saw of War in previous episode.

This episode finally descends this show properly into fake deep territory. Rajdhani's story makes no sense. He went to a world where death wasn't real, but death has been real in the multiverse for a long time. What's more people were killed but came back over and over, even though death is shown to be permanent. The world was filled with power holdovers that are created when people die. The perpetrator made himself into part of his power holdover electric chair, which why would that even work to begin with. And apparently the Buddhist is now an atheist, and gives a long cliche speech about how precious life is.

Generally I like speeches on the topic of the secular meaning of life, but it felt so very forced. It really comes as a slap in the face after Nozomi's senseless, extremely predictable death. They held her funeral before even getting the note that she died, and grieved her for all of 10 seconds. So yeah, getting back home is super easy, barely an inconvenience, with the space elevator nobody noticed.

The serial killer was Star-Boy for some reason. Seems completely out of character to do everything so brutally and directly, but whatever. Can't exactly start expecting any consistency in this show now. Characters are whatever the plot needs them to be at the time.
