A R I S E The King, the monarch of the dead, the shadow has arisen and has begun to take the mantle of death with him I felt a shiver down my spine, every cell of my body was in uproar, the long-awaited command had been announced, and Sung Jin-Woo had taken onto himself the power of a Shadow Monarch, the zenith of necromancy. With this, he will no longer need to fight alone, yet he also no longer needs any assistance from anyone. A true Solo Leveling individual. The building up to this point was worthwhile and the moment that moment that he brought Igris under his shadow, is absolute cinema indeed. Alas, I have come to the end of Solo Leveling season 1, I heard S2 is announced to be airing sometime this year, that's great. It's amazing how short this story is as we breezed through a ton of chapters already. looking at the manhwa, by the end of ep 12, we've gone through around 45-50 chapters out of the 200 total manhwa chapters. 4-5 seasons worth of content all in all. The next season would be yet another highlight of Jin-Woo's journey of levelling up. The Jeju Island raid is coming, and hoooly shit it's crazy how much this anime adaptation teased that. In the manhwa, they barely mentioned Jeju up to this point aside from the existence of such an incident. However, it seems that the anime wanted this major arc to be an even bigger deal. I am looking forward to seeing that be animated and oh am I looking forward to seeing HIM. Wonderful first season, a fantastic adaptation by A1 studio and overall a great effort to have this adaptation be realized at such a level. Considering just how awesome the visuals and art style were in the Mahnwa, it'd be a major disappointment had the anime lacked and while I do hope we'll see more visual effects and punchier sound effects in the second season. I couldn't complain much. Well done. |

| So, I haven't read the original source. I just started playing the mobile game recently, and the story piqued my interest. I think story in the game was better tbh. It felt more complete and have more depth on side characters. For the anime, it really is SOLO leveling. Apart from the animation, and Jin woo's interesting development, there wasn't any memorable moments from this anime. 6/10 |
| Aight I'll admit this was a pretty lit way to end the season, I actually did not expect the job Jin-Woo would get to be necromancer, i was also kinda feeling livid for him after he invested for an assassin build to get handed an int job, but like he said, a necromancer doesn't necessarily have to stay at the back depending on your stats and hay, I did also run a tank/frontline Necromancer build in Diablo 3 quite a lot so it does kinda work i guess. The build up for Jin-Woo's new abilities was aight. Although the whole "angel of death" the system evaluated Jin-Woo as i thought was funny with how cheesy it was, the overall tone i thought they nailed, felt more like an antagonist making a deal with the devil then a good guy pulling out Excalibur. The build up to the undead army and skill reveals were cool in their own way, and holy shit i was hyped when the camera panned to Igris and the realization kicked in. I actually also found it funny how there is also fail % chances and 3 attempts with the skill, made me think how it as basically a way more fucked version of Pokémon with capturing souls. MAN the Igris scene was good, they really focused on Igris like he was the main character, absolutely slayed in the spotlight. Funnily enough the whole time Jin-Woo was trying to Arise Igris i was thinking to myself, "Low-key if he does it, he could have his own Mahoraga which would be hilarious as fuck." but thinking about it more, he'd probably use Igris more like Vergil's Doppelganger ability from Devil May Cry 5. Honestly hope they shift Jin-Woo's character and placement in the story to more to an anit-hero or similar next season, i'd heavily fuck with it. The island stuff is pretty cool as well, they've been building the plot for it pretty well on the side and now it seems it's also reached a break point for a future arc, really interested in how it'll tie in with Jin-Woo's story. |
| Anyways it was fairly typical at times, and had some VERY predictable scenarios play out. Many times the way the ranking of enemies,as in their color stat of their difficulty was way too oversimplified. And the sheer lack of common sense the main character had made me mad. PLUS THE SCREENS DIDNT ALWAYS POP UP WHEN THEY SHOULD HAVE, like near the end for his FINAL LEVEL and stats T<T! The Mc also never played an rpg, let alone a video game in his life? IMPOSSIBRU! Plus the mc had "virtually" (come on, the digital pun fs with all the weird game and digi artwork in this show) no knowledge of high fantasy, and overall was just pathetic from the get go onwards...least he kinda changed, but...all those potions he coulda been buying and selling, or using to heal others, etc...oof. Dude coulda been way more proactive in dungeon grinding too...*smfh BUTT...I SUSPECTED his final class would be what it ended up being, and I WAS RIGHT! NECRO!!! MY FAV CLASS FROM DIABLO 2!!! YAH "SHADOW MONARCH" heh. It was also confusing that the subtitles had a korean name for the mc and others, but the voice actors said japanese names at times, and even on PAPER the main characters name looked and read japanese at least once...the confusion "ARISES" lol. Still had some tight scenes, and I understand that not everyone is into high fantasy, isekai, or rpgs; and thus having some of the same elements in the "real world" might be a draw for some folks, but for me...I'm on the fence about that aspect of this show. THis all felt like a combo of "GATE" and "DanMachi"...And not necessarily always in the best way. This almost got a higher score, but its a 6.5/10 which is good enough. Hopefully this gets more than just a 2nd season and its much better, but...With the news of what they are planning for season 2, IM not gonna hold my breath fr the most sterling quality story. I suspect it will waste time needlessly as "Overlord" season 2-4 did. PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG! AND STOP JUST MAKING 12 EPISODE SEASONS FFS! MAKE EM LONGER!!! |

Nowadays I prefer quality instead of quantity so I rather have 12 episodes as long as the animation quality is good, this anime has great animation quality and I loved it, if it was longer then the quality would degrade.
I don't like watching long animes anymore like Naruto or Bleach, most of the episodes look like shit because they can't keep the quality up, you simply can't with so many episodes, and don't get me started with One Piece.
| @xZabuzax Theres no guarantee that a longer show would suffer from a degrading lack of quality if the show was supposedly good and popular in the first place. SO too is there no guarantee of success just because a show is short. I just miss great shows that were longer than only 12 episodes, and gave viewers a worthwhile viewing experience. Everythings almost been done to death already, sadll, so even if story originality and plot points are roughly the same, if the look and vibe of a show is not always on point, even with only 12 eps, it will still all short of true greatness. Agree with you that one piece is way too long, and honestly I did like it much at all, so I dont bother with that series. Maybe if they make more summary speciesl that cover every chapter, that will be it for me. I aint trying to even get CLOSE to watching a 1000 ep anime. Talk about no guarantee of quality lol :P BE well. ^~^ |

| Didn't expect him to become a necromancer, guess the system's trying to make him an allround fighter. A rather weak ending for an overall good show. This show shined mostly when Jinwoo fought with or against humans, the system fights against soulless monsters weren't the highlight. Characters still need to be fleshed out, maybe season 2 will fix that. 7/10 |
