I like how everyone is appreciating the art and direction (taste) of this show while slamming the fanservice in Musaigen no Phantom World.

This is a prime example of why anime gets a bad rep. Unneeded overt sexualization.
Needless to say, I'm not going to continue even if the designated funny guy becomes the king of choices. And neither should you.
Interesting premise, fantastic artwork, and excellent voice actors are wasted here. :(

Like this guy says. But its not a deal breaker for me. I digress.

Slow start. The whole conversation while they were breaking near the end was just pointless and kinda annoying. My real only gripe was that part. Liked the rest. Kinda felt a little too much sexy posing going on...just felt out of place but...pretty. Looking forward to see where this goes.

Episode wasn't that bad. Much better than junk others were saying were pretty good. While this was (even by me) belittled way before today. The "sexy" posing I don't mind as long as it doesn't intrusive, I prefer it to the in your face echhi ( echhi without nipples). Well let's hope it gets a bit bloody, not ridiculously so but enough for the characters to "develop."

About the sexy part. It's Japan. You just get accustomed to accept it.

Their woman clothings also should be impossible to be made on that time period. But it's there, to be cute, sexy, whatever.

Witcher 3 showed us that sexy clothing doesn't have to be look out of place and can be believable in the time period.

But I admit, For some reason woman clothing more often to be presented with unbelievable material and design that deviates from the settings.

Edit : I'm not saying this I hate grimgar. On the contrary I enjoyed it and able to accept the a few quirks

I fell in love with this episode. Ahh, those visuals. Those character designs. And the characters themselves are so unique and adorable! The last time I felt this peaceful after watching an anime episode was...back when Re-Kan! aired. The end of the episode was so serene, it made me nostalgic.

I think this episode was really good, I loved the atmosphere of it and the art and animation was just plain beautiful. At first I thought it would be just like the other game animes like Sword Art Online or Log Horzion but it gave us a different feel which I really think felt refreshing for example I loved how they have amnesia and don't really know what is going on and how they are weak and how it makes it feel relatable to gamers when they first start in a MMORPG and even the character interactions felt like they were a bunch of real people with their different quirks playing a game together for the first time. So overall I cannot wait to see the next episode to see how it things progress.

Here is my full first impression and review on the episode:

Title: Hai to Gensou no Grimgar

Story: The story wasn't that "original", but nevertheless interesting and depending on how they decide to execute it the anime may end with a pretty good rating.

Art: The art wasn't the best, with some poorly made backgrounds and a few errors in some scenes with characters. While the art was not the greatest, I still managed to enjoy it.

Characters: Some characters fell into basic archetypes, and some felt like normal people. A strong 50:50 here.

Music: The background music was average, and the ending theme was pretty enjoyable.

Enjoyment: Liked it, but it's not anything amazing. I think it will turn out being a pretty good story, one that is well-needed this season.

Verdict: 'Twas "aight".

Note: I would love if this turned out like a mix of Log Horizon+DanMachi+NagiAsu :33

Damn this was better than I thought it would be

They actually spent time to focus on world building, setting up the mechanics of the world as well and even add in a bit of mystery in the side

So far it looks like it's going to be heavily focused on teams which is a good thing in my books because that shows that this series will most likely be character driven as well

The characters themselves aren't anything we haven't seen before but th.being in a group will surely make their interactions and development a lot more satisfying to see....Also I'm glad to see that nobody is OP for no reason

Pretty good start overall, pretty nice pacing and animation and I absolutely love the art style of the backgrounds and the music....No over the top fanservice either, but the small hints of it works fine for me

Not gonna lie, this shows way more promise than over half the shows I've watched in the last three days. In fact, I'm getting the Rokka no Yuusha "chill but still very interesting" vibe to it.
Might just start the LN up before this show is over.

Good start, even though a quarter of it was AO as per LN readers. Read somewhere that this doesn't seem as dark as the LN, would love for LN readers to elaborate on that (PM if it's too spoilerish).

Thanks in advance!

Pretty darn good start.

Doing a good job setting things up with this show. The visuals are really nice and the world seems like it could really be fleshed out nicely as the show goes on.

The situation works as well. Good to find a twist on the idea of being transported into an unknown fantasy realm. Having the cast get there with no real skills and no memories of their homes manages that. They have to adapt to this world with basically nothing. This is as much starting at the bottom and rising up from that as you can get.

The cast has potential even though Ranta is starting out quite the jerk. Will be interesting to see how each of them grow through this series and possible overcome some of their flaws.

This only went on my PTW list because of the the visuals shown in the trailer, and I was not at all disappointed with the beautiful background art style and the scenery. I also really enjoyed for the most part, the relaxing atmosphere that's hinted with some sadness. Wasn't surprised to see the serious and forlorn faces on the characters in the ED. This already separates itself from other similar "game" premises (even if this is not a game? and death is real?) just by the atmosphere itself.

What I didn't like though was the boob talk. Characters with personality like Ranta are not my favorite, especially when it comes in the form of a combo with Yoshino Hiroyuki. I also agree that there were a too many sexy poses, and I'm not even talking about fanservice poses, but just the way the females were standing. Not a big deal, but it caught my attention because they don't look natural standing like that. Another mini-gripe I had was how unfitting I found Hosoyan voicing Haruhiro. I don't even know Haruhiro's personality, but the voice and the character design just seems like a huge mismatch to me.

But overall, the first episode gave me a positive impression, and I hope it stays this way, especially the relaxing yet sad tone they've established so far. It's also interesting to see how terrible they are at their respective positions, they're a huge mess. That means it'll be fun to see their improvement (hopefully they do improve).

Well.... this is really slow and their team started off as complete trash and the mage can't even cast a spell and cries all the time.

So yeah... pretty much it's SAO with less action and more boring SoL. Even though people's lives seem to be in danger they seem to have enough time to have discussions about breasts... shouldn't have expected much more from an LN adaptation. Could also do without the fanservice and weird poses.

At least the backgrounds look nice? Sometimes they clash with the character art though. I'll give it a another 2 episodes.

The beginning looked interesting, then it quickly turned really boring. The characters are incredible childish and pretty unbelievable.

I don't get this entire "we're on a school trip" feeling so often used in situations where people should be serious and actually act their age because they're suppsoed to be life threatening.

That annoying archer girl screaming when seeing the goblins food etc? Really kills any kind of suspense.

Ranta red-haired guy is simply annoying and unsightly, in addition no to being interesting Renta is also useless. without a doubt the worst character in the anime.
Renta clearly lacks intelligence and discernment, the morale of the group was already low and without confidence, and he even made a member of crying and being depressed, leaving the morale of the group and its members worse than they already were.
It was to be expected coming from the famous character Generic ''idiot friend of the MC'', used to comic relief and make antics and idiocy throughout the anime.
this type of character was immortalized and well diffused through of character Sunohara of clannad .
Unlike the others characters ''idiot friend of the MC'', Renta is extremly annoying, stupid and bland, and utterly without intelligence, its ridiculous attitudes and your bullshit negatively affect the group, affecting directly aa morale and confidence of the members, certainly keep a stupid guy as Renta the group, does not add anything, besides being an idiot and useless, your actions harm directly the the morale and confidence of the group, their idiocies may well lead the group to dangerous situations and their destruction.
It really is a shame that Yume has not killed him, because will be really hard having to endure an idiot character like this.

I kindof liked it: the premise and setting are nothing new, but the show's slower take on things made for a surprisingly enjoyable first episode.
The fanservice however feels extremely forced, and the 5min boobies/I'm-fat-but-I'm-not/ discussion followed by that semi-lesbian-ecchi-performance for the pleasure of the guys and the male audience was really out there and completely threw me off, tbh.

I must say that this is one good looking anime.
I knew it was going to be a looker but damn this first episode really showed that off with full bloom.
I kinda dig the super slow combat, I mean I like how they are not all super powerful gods and make mistakes during the fight..I kinda sense that will we see some major death's before the animes over.

Also, am I the only creeped out how that goblin attacked that mage, I wonder if it wanted more then to kill her ( I really hope that shit isn't in the anime or LN)

Overall 5/5 for me and will stick with it

That was a nice start, They took their time to build up everything slowly and explain the world. I really like the Art.

The whole episode felt like the beginning of an MMO, You choose your class and talk to someone who gives you a basic clue on what you should be doing (In this case figure out how to get become a member of that Borderside faction), Guilds, Parties and proceed to PvE xD.

Though I'm still unsure if they are actually stuck in a game as it was never explicitly mentioned.
