| 10/10. This anime is very touching and has a message that any human can relate to. I was tearing up through the whole end of the episode. I wonder how long it took the sory teller to come up with these ideas for this tale because they were so unique yet the concepts are intertwined in interesting ways. It Reminds me of Harry Potter in that respect even though the concepts are quite different. I love everything about this series and im pretty sure its going to be one of my top if not my top favorite anime. |
| The only gripe I had was that Sosuke got away, the bastard needs to pay. Other than that this series was perfect, gets a 10/10 for me. |

| I only have a very vague understanding of what happened in this finale. But I think I like what they did with Isako and Yuuko. This has been a pretty interesting show. I like the character designs, the aesthetic of the urban environments and the lively animation (reminiscent of Studio Ghibli films). There were a lot of cool concepts in this world, like the cyberpets and all that "other side" stuff. I appreciate all the imagination and hard work that went into creating this world. The child characters were believable enough, if not all of them were all that interesting. I didn't enjoy the series as much as I wanted to, though. There was too much exposition that didn't help enough with understanding the mechanics of the world, and some of the concepts were explained in such arcane terms that the technology may as well have used magic instead of science. Realism normally isn't something I'm concerned about - the problem is when the technobabble doesn't help enough with comprehension. The mid-section of the series was a bit too slow for my taste. I feel like a more lively design could have helped the cyber technology shine better; some of the cyberworld looked a bit too plain. I don't think that all of it should have looked crazy wild, I just think it could have been a bit weirder or more colorful. The illegals are an exception, they looked totally cool. |
| Well that was certainly an emotional ending. That damn goodbye with Densuke got me good, and I'm not even a dog person, not at all really. So this was a pretty good show. It certainly looked much better than I expected it would for a series from 2007. That aside though I'm afraid I don't have too much to say about it. At times, especially in the final run, it did become somewhat hard to follow. Not that I was unable to understand the overarching story, but the later twists and turns felt like they sometimes came out of nowhere or too fast and got explained away with Star Trek-esque technobabble. Maybe a slower re-watch, I speed-blitzed through this in around 3 days, would help alleviate that issue. Honestly I don't expect I'll ever watch this again though. It was good but not that good. Those seemingly one-off episodes near the middle like with the nessie-esque creature or with the beards that reminded me of the episode of Futurama where Bender played God were probably my favorites, and they had nothing to do with the main plot. Not that the main plot was bad or anything, it was just 7 out of 10 level good. Maybe an 8 if I were feeling more generous, but I'm not with this show so I'll keep it the 7. |
| So this ride is coming to an end.And what a ride it was. I liked Denno Coil from the very beginning. The setting was intriguing with many cool ideas, something I haven't seen before,one could tell someone poured a lot of heart into this. Moreover,the same applied to the characters,episodic plot as well as the story as a whole and the overall tone. The characters felt organic,evoked interest and were easy to relate to and towards the end had a clear image of their mind,at least for the important ones. Only minus might be the villian Nekome,since I thought they could've done more with him,but that's being nitpicky on a high level. The semi episodic part might not have been my favorite,but it had still some nice episodes like the one with the beard one or with Plesio. Furthermore it did a great job at setting up the fantastic second half. The pace felt appropriate and we got the right amount of necessary information,which included also a lot of explanation regarding the many technological elements. A lot of shows don't bother with fleshing out their own system or make it too complicated,hence the plot becomes harder to follow, especially when the technology is an essential part of it.Dennou Coil on the other hand succeeded in that department,the amount of time spent on world building was just about right and improved the enjoyment in the second half a lot. In terms of atmosphere Denno Coil was able to cover a broad spectrum,ranging from suspenseful mystery/horror over to lighthearted comedy sequences. The OST's were always on point. Speaking about sound,the theme songs,foremost the opening were godlike and yet another reason I've grown so fond of this show. There were also a lot of interesting themes and messages throughout the entire course. However, I'm sure that I didn't get everything to 100%,but at the very least I got the gist of it. Entertaimentwise I don't have much to say ,aside from the fact that I had a lot of fun during the whole run time, the last couple of episodes were even able to kick things up a notch,it was truly an emotional roller coaster and the final wrapped things up nicely. Satisfying endings which leave you also a bit melancholic are rare and have to be treasured. 9/10 for now and yet again another anime in my alltime favorites. |

| In the end, not as compelling as I thought it was going to be. The technology doesn't even seem believable in its own fictional setting, and is obviously set up just to do what it needs to for the plot—which wasn't that intriguing in the end either but was still handled with some emotional power—and to deliver its message to its intended target audience. There wasn't the usual, technology/internet is bad. finger wagging at young people here. Instead the show wanted to focus on the importance of the intangible, fragile emotional bonds between people. It was okay overall. I liked the mix of supernatural and sci-fi elements that made up the way the cyber spaces were portrayed, as well as the connection between abandoned IRL spaces and the out of date e- ones. Not to mention the urban legends that are born from those kinds of places; that different kinds of 'ghosts' haunt each of them was a cool aesthetic but I felt the mystery was more entertaining than the reality. Up until the end it never made sense to me how a consciousness could be separated from a real body without the body dying. But thinking about it, I might have been taking this 'separation' thing a little too literally while watching the series and that may have unfairly biased me against some scenes, and I think the reason for that was that I envisioned the cyber world as being a doubling of our own and assumed that with human souls there would need to be virtual ones to fit into a cyber body. But it's probably more akin to some kind of hypnotic/trance-like state in the way that it causes a coma, as well as death in the case of Yasako's grandfather. Though with what Haraken said about emotions at the end there, the 'ghosts' of the virtual world are basically remnants of human will, which is how I thought about the Illegals since the beginning, so at least I wasn't led completely astray. It is sort of unsettling to think that random, nameless people could have been 'lost' in that space and nobody would know or care enough to call for them to come back... I laughed when it turned out Yasako was basically the cause of all this shit from Isako's perspective. Other than Daichi (my favorite episode being the one with Daichi and his pet 'fish') and maybe Tamako, the characters in this series were kinda annoying. Not because they were kids or anything, but just the way the story limited their behavior made them irritating. Unlike most people, I never disliked Kyoko. |

| I liked this show well enough but the sci-fi setting didn't do anything for me. It felt like they left a lot of it intentionally vague because they couldn't figure out a better way to integrate it into the story. Overall, a good show, even if the plot felt convoluted at times and not all of the characters were that great. 7/10 |
| Good concept, extremely weird execution. 6/10 The good: -The idea -The episodes involving Kanna and Isako. The mystery was really good. The bad: -The cast. All kids except Haraken were annoying. Kyoko is easily one of the biggest waste of space I´ve seen in an anime, period. The protagonist was also extremly annoying and most of her dialogues are just repeating someone else´s name. -The first 13 episodes were almost filler. -The sci fi elements don´t seem believable at all. There were some explanations but all of the existencialism at the end and the "What´s real and what´s not" was unnecessary, even worse with the whole "I created this world but we don´t know why or how". -The rules of the VR world and the real one are inconsistent. Most of the time the kids and the attacks made by Satchi were supposed to be harmless, but none of them simply took the glasses off to simply negate what was happening. -The ending was kinda forced? I mean what´s the point of making one of the Yuko´s sacrifice herself if they were going to bring her back. -The "bad" guy Sosuke was just annoying. Also it doesnt make sense to shut down all kids in town if they are still going to put you in prison you know? even if the company gets trashed by doing so. -Why all kids are geniuses in these show, but they aren´t smart enough sometimes to use common sense? |
| A pretty good ending, and absolutely a worth to watch show. However, there are two things that feels wrong to me: First, Fumie, one of the main characters of the show, disappears in the last arc. She doesn't even speak in the last two episodes. And secondly, Megamass tried to kill Yasako, but didn't have any punishment. |

| Now that a series which hit the spot. Only problem of the series is Yasako and isako connection they made was a little bit convoluted plot wise and kind of yuri baiting, other than that this series is perfect. |

| What a ride this was. The final episode was really great, a hint too melodramatic at times but given the amount of build towards these moments and the frustrations involved with Isako's character, I'll allow it. The buildup was more than satisfying enough for the drama to play out like it and it was so well written too anyway. Good to see the Yuukos be comrades by the end throughout everything, even if they both live in different cities by the time they started middle school. Overall, this series was incredible. There were minor little nitpicks at times, but not enough to really impact what was a tremendous run of episodes from a mystery, atmosphere and characterization perspective. The foundation was well built, the episodic portion did well with fleshing out the world building and characters, and the 2nd half took care of most of the storyline and proper characterization for the main leads. This was an outstanding show which was thematically strong and entertaining to watch even beyond that, although I wouldn't compare the depth of those themes to something like Serial Experiments Lain which was a lot more complex and more appreciatable. Kind of ironic that this show was incredible but it's still only my 2nd favorite show of the season (Spring 2007), Seirei no Moribito still wins over there for me. But man this was class. A top-tier show for me for sure. Great production too to go with the top class writing and concepts as a whole. 9.5/10 overall |

| Great show. I think it went on a little bit too long though. Could've maybe been done in 24 episodes. Compared to the rest of the cast, I didn't really care for Yasako. I get her thing was being the nice, meek kind of person. It's just dull to watch. Glad she developed some agency in the end and did stuff. |
| A pretty good show. The ending was a little generic from what I expected but I'm glad everything wrapped up pretty well considering how confusing it got at times. Won't forget about this one |

| That was amazing. I think a major difference between Dennou Coil and other cyberpunk shows like Serial Experiments Lain or Ghost in the Shell was how much more accessible the show is for regular viewers. At the same time, the difference between Dennou Coil and something like Digimon Tamers or Megaman.EXE is having a much more condensed and focused story and collection of themes. I held off on finishing Dennou Coil for over a decade, as I initially believed that it was a special anime of a caliber I wasn't able to comprehend at the time. So, uh, yeah. It's great. After all this time, it's still great and even more relevant to present-day issues of advancing technologies and humanity's reliance on that same tech. So yeah. I don't know what else to say. Yeah, I got nothing. |
| As it turns out, Yuko Amasawa is the true true villain of the piece. She kidnapped Densuke and was the cause Yasko's grandfather's death. I wouldn't care about it as much if it wasn't for the fact that she essentially knew her brother was really dead, but still did terrible things under the guise of denial. Now! Sosuke's intentions are finally revealed!! Except not really. He still feels like an afterthought to all of this. Not to mention he was soundly, and super conveniently, defeated by Takeru who had the deus ex machina in his back pocket all along. I'm still not entirely sure what was up with Michiko either. It seems like the implication is that she was Isako and Yasako's love child? But, even so, I don't understand her obsession with them. Or what she was trying to do by keeping Isako trapped in the other side? At the end of it all, nothing particularly got explained. I'm a bit torn by what to rate this now. There were some good moments throughout the series, but I feel like most of the time I was just pushing through episodes without really enjoying it. |

| 2007 must have been such a different time, because this show really is just okay. The last few episodes brought the rating up a bit, but it took entirely too long to get there, and I didn't care enough about any of the characters for anything to have any weight. This last episode was also a mishmash of conveniences. The only emotional part was Densuke, and that's because he's a dog. Even that scene, which was good in theory -- Yasako seeing Illegal Densuke and holding him, saying goodbye -- could have been done a lot better. I liked the sci-fi elements, and I was okay with it being supernatural. It got a little creepy, but it felt like it didn't want to pass the surface. I would rather have not had the first half of the series and had the rest just be...better. |
| One of the worst animes I had ever watched, going through this 26 episodes was one of the most painful watches I ever had, I had to read Tolstoy and watch Sansho The Bailiff between episode runs of this anime for my mind to be able to withstand this garbage, what a melodrama fest combined with a bunch of sh*t characters, filler alike episodes, a full display of "power of friendship" at the end, some reviewer said: This is a kid show, well take those words seriously, this is 100% a kids show, people think because the show deals with grief makes it already more mature than it really is, there are plotholes you must ignore because obviously a kids show wouldn't need to be so precise, the behavior of some characters were obnoxious, the starting 10-14 episodes are just a bunch of kids running and playing games, they used the plot device of killing a pet like 5 times in the anime, I guess they thought that was the only way to keep this show alive. If are 18+, you will hardly enjoy even a bit of this show, 12+ wouldn't be interested in this kind of anime and the only viewers who would barely watch this are 6+ y.o who had nothing better to watch (seldom the case) , so this anime is practically unrecommendable and unwatchable, it gets a 1/10. |

| i first gave up on this show years ago after watching only 1 episode. my expected rating at some point in the middle went from a 7 to a 9, thought that the 9 was pushing it... it's now a 10/10. when i think about the comedic episodes, the plotholes, and the unanswered questions now, i do eyebrow it a bit. but i rate subjectively, ha, so yeah. 10. the most disappointing part is that this is an original production. goddamn it all. was hoping to read the manga immediately. |
| bruh im so confused so the obsolete space is like a digital psychiatric ward? it was created just to heal isako, and then somehow morphed into this whole second world? and it reacts to whoever's inside, so michiko was created by both yukos?? i guess it's kinda sweet but they KEEP MILKING DENSUKE. i hate this stop bringing him back if he can't come back for real :(( 7/10 it was really ambitious and had some nice messages, i kinda feel like at some point "the other side" was a metaphor for depression for example. and the philosophizing about what's real was interesting. however (contrary to popular opinion it seems) i preferred the SOL /worldbuilding vibe of the first half of the series, it was comedic and lighthearted but still interesting (beards was the peak). afterwards when it got into the "real" plot, i had high hopes but after the saga of kyoko getting kidnapped it turned out not to be very enjoyable to watch... i was never dying to watch the next episode or know what happened next, i was just mostly confused trying to piece things together and also really terrified for/heartbroken about densuke lmao. kinda a stressful journey. but great art, great character development just not 100% my cup of tea i suppose |

| I feel like the whole 2nd half was really underwhelming, I love psychological and sci-fi stuff but this show really should have stayed in its slice-of-life mode, instead of the cool VR elements it became a plain ghost story with the power of friendship and questionable drama. Still 6/10 because the 1st half had some great episodes |

| Well, I'll be in mourning of a series that tackles the topic of mourning, that's quite ironic. No seriously, I'm really gonna miss this show, I've become very attached to it. I must admit I didn't expect the ending to go this way, it was a lot more melancholic than I imagined. For example, I really thought the show would go the usual route with Yasako and Isako becoming friends, but no. Not exactly at least. That's... painfully realistic. But it's not the only bittersweet aspect of this ending and I really like that the show wasn't afraid to do this, especially considering its message of accepting pain. Because while it tackled a lot of very interesting topics in a very meaningful manner, at the end of the day the show has always mainly been about growing up and living. It's not for no reason that the main characters are children, and it makes the fact that it does such a great job at portraying child characters all the more worthy of praise. And this episode really was one of the most impactful I've seen. That scene with Yasako saying farewell to Densuke, or little Yasako meeting her grandfather, or of course Isako managing to move on... It's all so well-done. The story itself was a bit hard to understand at times and I absolutely did not expect it to go this way but it was very well crafted. Now I do have a few complaints regarding the show as a whole, as much as I loved it (and trust me, I truly did). First of all, Sosuke and Takeru as characters felt quite unnecessary. Narratively, they do serve the reveal about Coil, but I can't say I liked them, especially Sosuke (Takeru is quite endearing at least). I also wasn't always fond of the way the show would sometimes just dive into info-dumps, it didn't always feel completely organic. And while the show really did offer a wonderful story, it was sometimes a bit clumsy in the way it would bring the informations and twists to the table. And finally, probably the aspect that saddens me the most, is that for how much time it spent developing all these characters and making us get attached to them, it's a bit of a shame that the final arc was pretty much entirely about Yasako and Isako to the point the rest of the cast aside from Tamako, Megabaa and Haraken (and to a certain extent, Kyoko) felt completely relegated to the sidelines. Don't get me wrong, the show had to end on Yasako and Isako, I've got no issue with it, the problem is that I was so attached to the other characters and especially Daichi and Fumie that I found that a real shame they didn't get more screentime at the end. Daichi especially never got a real chance to shine and that's so sad, especially since that would've been great for his character development. Edit : I forgot the time Daichi fought the bullies. That's still notable. So for these reasons I can't give it more than 8, but that's a very strong 8 because I know it's a show I'll never forget. |
