Marzan said: They need to practice their shooting. Yup. Especially Momo. They all need intense training for the match as well. With Miho now handling out the strategy and possibly training them she would immensely help the team more. Mho is one experience girl and possibly well known for her skills because of how Yukari knew her. According to the prequel manga, Mhio was already driving tanks since she was eleven and possibly participated in tanks battles already. This makes her the senior of team Oorai. |

This could be good anime but without panzer battles. If I wanted to watch World of Tanks I would play it. Those girls are living in fascism regime and nothing really make sense. I am finally dropping it, it is really unwatchable, waste of time for me. |

I am finally dropping it, it is really unwatchable, waste of time for me. Let's see. If you didn't want to watch something with tanks, then why watch something called "Girls and Panzers"? It's not as if there was any false advertising going on here. Or are you so incredibly endowed with time that you go out of your way to watch things you know you will hate? Or do you see yourself as some sort of moral police, sort of like those religious folks who go to watch porn movies to tell people how bad they are? Speaking of which, how do you know it is fascist? Merely because people enjoy a martial art? Lots of people in our lovely democracy spend their weekends re-enacting civil war or WWII battles, or spend it practicing shooting, or participate in the national guard. Are all those people fascist? Or what about people who go to watch the blue angels or tour military ships during base open houses? Are they all fascist as well? This is nothing in this anime to suggest that these people are fascist, or at war. Senshadou seems to have replaced the Olympics as a means of expressing national pride, and I don't see how Senshadou is any more fascist than the Olympic games (all that marching, blatant nationalism and focus on martial sports). In the animation, Senshadou is a form of entertainment. Matches are broadcasted and the town people come out to cheer. And is it really that far-fetched? This is a heck of a lot more interesting than watching Football (either American or Association), and I would rather put my tax money into rebuilding that shop owner's store than lining the pockets of some billionaire in building a useless stadium (if that is indeed how funding is supplied, given then acceptance of most of the town members (who don't mind being woken up at 5 o'clock with a tank blast), I have a feeling that private donations are more than enough to keep the Federation going). Actually once you accept a couple of very minor assumptions, this show makes perfect sense. The writers obviously put a lot of thought into it (more than the average animation). They explained that the tank rounds are not as powerful as actual rounds, that the interior of the tanks have been re-enforced with carbon (most likely nano-carbon tubes) to protect the girls, they explained why no one cares about the damage done to the buildings, they have explained that this is very popular sport (so popular that even without a school practicing Senshado, the ship had a shop dedicated to the "art"), with a long tradition (grandmother recognizing a Panzer IV, as well as their being different "Schools"), indeed so much has been inferred to make sense of this crazy comment, I have to wonder what you have been watching for the past four weeks. Each week they have explained more and more of their world, it makes me very curious what further details they will reveal. If you want to me to explain other things for you, feel free to ask. |

Not as bad an episode as I expected, better than last week's. The battle was lengthy and I liked to see the tanks. However, I still really dislike the characters and how unbelievable everything is. I watched this series for the World War 2 tanks, but I have a lot of issues with it. Churchill tanks' turrets turn slowly while others do not, narrow alley and being shot at by 5 tanks, but zigzag with a tank somehow works, the tanks can speed pretty fast, they blow up shops, yet they cannot go onto a closed road, the open town suddenly changed to intersections of one-lane streets, everyone misses their shots, etc. I am essentially raging because I wanted at least good battles, but now I don't enjoy even that. I'm sorry to say such things on the episode discussion, but it's my opinion nonetheless. The only thing I do still enjoy are the looks (exterior and interior) of the tanks, they are very cool. Least favorite series unfortunately, and I may possibly drop.. 3/5 |

I love how they decided to go with the urban setting. Makes a better battlefield than a plain boring terrain. I hope if they lose again, all the teams should participate in the ankour dance. lol |

However, I still really dislike the characters and how unbelievable everything is. .... 3/5 I hate for you to be disappointed, particularly since a couple of your complaints far from being unbelievable, actually show the surprising attention to detail this series has shown. 1) the open town suddenly changed to intersections of one-lane streets - this is very typical of Japan, where one lane streets are the norm. This particular animation it is based on the real Japanese city of Ooarai, Symbv's post #74 in this thread matches up the animation with actual street shots. Far from this being fiction, it is actually stunningly real. 2) yet they cannot go onto a closed road - There are rules to Senshadou (in fact in one thread someone posted the rules the Writer defined for the series). One of the involved restricted areas. Think of the "closed road" being an "out of bounds" marker, another rule is that incidental damage to building is reimbursed, but the participants cannot deliberately cause damage. 3) everyone misses their shots - I am not a tank expert, but I believe odds of hitting a target are low to begin with, hitting a moving target even lower, and hitting a randomly moving zigzagging target extremely low. This is why the British commander had no fear of attacking up the hill against the five entrenched tanks. Also remember that the entire Ooarai team have no real experience in fighting, their practice was against static targets. Of course Momo's miss, and the four tanks firing on her tank, was done for comedic effect, and well done I must say. 4) Churchill tanks' turrets turn slowly while others do not - other people here can probably speak to this better than I (one of the fun things on this thread is the number of informative experts), but I imagine there is quite the tradeoff between armor and maneuverability. The Churchill is a heavily armored tank, so this probably impacts how fast their turret can move. In that the Writers of this series seem to have their facts together, I think they probably have shown the turret speeds as they actually are. Sorry for going on like this, but what I have enjoyed most about this series is the thought the writer and director and team have put into it. They have turned a stupid concept into something very fun and enjoyable. I am really looking forward towards seeing why there are "school ships" and more about the obsession with Senshadou. |

Yeah, your consideration to drop it may not be a bad idea in this case. What I notice is it is hard to convince people why they should like a character, particularly if there is cultural difference and discrepancy of point of view, so I won't push you to like them. It is usually futile anyway (although I am convinced that whatever you don't like is more a cultural sensitivity thing more than the inherent likeability of the characters.) _Saburo_ said: I watched this series for the World War 2 tanks, but I have a lot of issues with it. I have a feeling that they focus on what the anime got right, how much detailed attention the staff put into inserting military related info bits in the anime, and how much they made the animation look cool, rather than why such-and-such motion or maneuver is possible or how those girls could do what they did etc. Anyway I learned a great deal from those people, and I posted about them in this thread (e.g. the Panjandrum on the playing card is a wonderful thought the staff put in the anime) _Saburo_ said: I am essentially raging because I wanted at least good battles, but now I don't enjoy even that. The consensus I read in those forums is that the battle in this episode exceeds all expectation of what this anime could have achieved, and military fans (at least those in Japan) are giving their 2 thumbs up. There is a reason for this episode to be called "god-tier" by some fans. Later episodes may just top this in terms of technical achievement and entertainment value, but if you don't like the battle shown in this episode at all, it is not so likely you would enjoy the fight in later episodes.... Anyway, one last word: at least this anime portrays tank battle more realistically than Saki did with mahjong i ;-D X-D |

Have you ever had a brain blast, one of those intense bursts of insight when you suddenly piece together several separate threads into a common whole? I just had one of those. I think I pieced together a lot of the background of this series, and some of the things we can expect. This is guesswork on my part, but in case I am actually correct I will put it in the spoiler. The Nishizumi school of Senshadou's philosophy can be summed up by Maho's comments in episode two: Never Give Up, Never Run Away. This would mean to stand you ground, even if it means you are defeated. When her mother is introduced, I predict she will treat Miho very similar to how Isuzu's mother treated her (though I think Miho's mother will be far more aggressive about it, expressing forcibly her disappointment in Miho). Isuzu's flower arranging philosophy is the opposite. It is being graceful and accommodating. It is the very opposite of the Nishizumi philosophy. Both Miho and Isuzu, even though they are successors to a tradition, believe that each style is missing something. Isuzu believes her family style is missing strength and boldness, Miho believes her family style is missing gracefulness and flexibility. This has been foreshadowed by how intense Miho has looked at the Isuzu style flower arrangements (both in episode 2 (verbally) and 4 (she looks at it, and in her reaction to Isuzu's declaration of making a stronger flower). This would explain Miho's trauma. As a young girl, when fighting her sister, Maho used her strength against Miho, Miho tried to escape, causing her tank to slip on an embankment, and Miho to nearly drown. Far from being concerned, her mother and Maho were both blamed Miho for abandoning the family tradition and thus falling into her predicament. Their lack of flexible is the source of Miho's hatred of Senshadou. If this is correct, then it suggests how this anime will end. I look forward to seeing whether or not I have this figured out. |

The more I watch this show the more I enjoy it. The characters are cute as all get-out (Shimada Humikane strikes again!) and the tanks are awesomely animated. It's just really well done all-around so far. Sure, some of the aspects are ridiculous and some things just don't make much sense, but that's the joy of anime. Can't wait for episode 5! Also, I made a fanclub for anyone that's enjoying the show! http://myanimelist.net/clubs.php?cid=34165 |

I have to admit I was somewhat skeptical when I read the preview information about the show but that opening sequence on the first episode (reprised with a lot more background information on this episode) sold me. Just to see those tanks in animated action was worth this month's subscription fees alone. I even dragged my war gaming buddy in from the games room where we'd been setting up World in Flames to sit down and watch the sequence (he's not an anime fan so he wasn't nearly as excited as I was). I won't say this is the best show this season as there are a lot of really good shoujo and shounen series in contention, but it certainly is an entertaining one--sort of the anti-Jormungand in terms of military conflict. |

WORLD IN FLAMES? Do you play board wargames? The name springs a lot of fond memory from me when I played this wonderful game by Australian Design Group back in the 80s. I do not know it is still being played !!! Wow.... Perhaps one day we will see a boardgame that is called "Girls und Panzer" published in Japan.... I will surely be among the first to place my order. The physical quality of the Japan made board wargames is just superb (I own a few boardgames that are based on Gundam etc, even Urusei Yatsura! ) |

1. If Churchill can turn it's turret as fast as other tanks, it would be awfully unrealistic. That is the price for having a tough ass turret that can withstand a point blank shot on the side without triggering the auto-resign system. Just forget WoT gameplay please, the tanks in Wot can do amazing things that will never happen in real life. I found this anime to be more realistic than Wot actually. 2. Amateur hiting target is hard. Hitting a moving target is harder. Hitting a moving target while you are moving or have just stopped is way harder. I see no wrong with Oorai girls missing their targets and the Matlidas couldnt hit the PzIV. In fact, it will be very unrealistic if they actually hit something. 3. I dont understand how come this is racist or facist. I own only german tanks in WoT. And my crew all wear german uniform and I have an iron cross on my tanks. Does that make me a facist too? Does that make WoT a facist game too? In fact, there is japanese tank and a american tank in Oorai team too. Does having an american tank make this anime racist or facist? 4. Dont forget, this is senshadou, not WWII. |

Otherwise it would not have been possible to knock out that SPG at the front. After checking the video a few times and reading comments in Japanese forums, I think what happened in the last duel between the Churchill and PzIV was that the PzIV actually managed to fire and hit the Churchill first but its turret is so thickly armored that the hit failed to knock it out. Churchill fired only very shortly after PzIV but it destoryed its gun and knocked it out. So in terms of tactics, Miho in fact won brilliantly but limited by the hardware she and her team could not snatch victory at the end. |

True, but I think during the confrontation they could have run around the churchill in circles and keep firing at it more. But then again, Miho and her crew doesn't have any experience fighting one and not knowing it's weakness put them at a disadvantage. I'm proud for Miho on thinking such tactics it proves that she's a good captain for Oorai yet, she it'll take long to find her footing. |

There was simply no way to run around the Churchill if it did not move out of its position at the street intersection....True, but I think during the confrontation they could have run around the churchill in circles and keep firing at it more.. One more thing: There is an explanation why Hana missed the Churchill tank at the beginning of the match.. She asked Miho about the width of Churchill tank and Miho replied it is 3.25 meter. HOWEVER, the width as shown on the rangefinder was not its full width because the Churchill tank was seen at an angle - the actual width that portended the big triangle (4 Streichen) is thus not 3.25 meter but something less. NO WONDER Hana failed to hit the tank !!! X-D :-D |

They should let Yukari be the gunner for while being an amateur herself, she actually knows how to do things without reading the manual/getting help from 2chan. She is like a trainee in a military school, not total newbie like poor Hana. About the fight, it is clearly that PzIV shot first but couldnt do enough damage, well....that is what they get from driving a tank that reminds the old lady in ep 3 her youth time. |

Clearly the staff got the agreement of the owners to use the actual names in the anime. I wonder how long they spent in town for research and talking to the locals.... |

So this is how the PzIV ran away from the chasing tanks from St.Gloriana Team. Point A is where one Matilda tank bumped into a restaurant-hostel. At the end of the turn at Point A is where Miho got trapped. After that is the route taken by her to escape. EDIT: It is amazing that the local shops already display Girls und Panzer posters... |

symbv EDIT: It is amazing that the local shops already display Girls und Panzer posters...[/quote said: I think the turning point for local businesses readily adopting animation occurred when Lucky Star was the rage in Japan. The Washinomiya shrine they used as a setting in the series had over 3,500 people turn out for a New Year's event, and 1,000s of other fans show up as well. For towns in rural Japan suffering from economic decline, the power of anime became very real. Since the Touhoku Earthquake, I have noticed that towns in Northeastern Japan seem to have seized upon animation as a means of attracting tourism, and the use of location in animation has become much more pronounced. Rinne Langrange was a walking advertisement for Kamogawa, I have no doubt that the Ooarai Tourism board is on board (if not actually helping to sponsor) Girls Und Panzer. |

^ Come to think of Touhoku Earthquake, I remember at that time there were talks among anime otaku about paying visit to Sendai (who was hit by the earthquake and tsunami too) where Kannagi was supposed to take place. And besides Lucky Star, there are also the very successful example of K-On (I actually went to Toyosato just to visit that K-On school !! ) and Tamayura (I actually went to Takehara just because of this anime ! ) or Hanasaku Iroha.... Recent anime like Tari Tari and Hyouka also promoted "otaku pilgrimmage" because of the locales used. Rinne no Langrange is considered kind of an ambivalent example of it because it was seen by anime fans to be too pushy about promoting Kamogawa and so its repeated reference of Kamogawa in the anime (the town's name is even found in title of every episode) is treated as a running joke by fans. That said, the town indeed gained recognition because of the anime, and I am sure the town will keep using the characters in the anime for their own tourism promotion. |

WORLD IN FLAMES? Do you play board wargames? The name springs a lot of fond memory from me when I played this wonderful game by Australian Design Group back in the 80s. I do not know it is still being played !!! Wow.... Yes, there is a lot this show is doing to "distort" what the tanks can do, but I've been very surprised at how much it is getting right. I've NEVER seen a film (live action or otherwise) get combat of any sort "right" - there are ALWAYS technical errors. At least here the tanks really do look like the right things, unlike the T-34 mocked up to look like a Tiger in the movie Saving Private Ryan or the outright use of modern tanks to represent WWII tanks (for, example, the M48 Patton's and M7 Chaffee's to represent German and US tanks in the movie Patton). As for turning the turrets, though I don't know the details of the Churchilll I can say that early war tanks used hydraulic assisted hand cranks, which required a LOT of elbow grease to work, though electric assisted cranks were introduced. The first Panthers, for instance, had electric assist, but that was abandoned late in the war when time, materials and resources were lacking. The problem for the Panther crew was that the turret was unbalanced, and the result was that the crew had to keep the tank level or else turn the tank like an assault gun because it became very very difficult to turn the turret if the tank was on an incline. |

Oh, I should also add regarding the turret speed thing, the US M4/75 shermans with the weak 75mm gun really had to get close and behind a Tiger I to have a chance of a kill, but this was not impossible to do. It actually was standard practice to take advantage of the sherman's maneuverability and rapid turret traverse relative to that of the Tiger to get behind it - a good driver could get around a Tiger faster than the tiger could turn to shoot at it. The problem for the Sherman crew was getting close...when the tiger could kill a sherman well out past 1000 yards... |

Whereas many people here enthuse about World of Tank, but for tactical tank battles, I am really old school. Yaquinto's Panzer series or Avalon Hill's Tobruk ( I wonder if the later published Deluxe Tobruk to be any good ) or even ASL or Squad Leader/Cross of Iron would be what I'd go back to if I want to drive some tanks myself. |

(I freely admit I often talk to much) one other thing on the "zig/zag" Though Mako was getting more out of that Mk IV that it probably could have done, zig/zagging tanks is accurate. In North Africa the Germans, British, Italians and later US learned that to stay alive they had to do exactly that. Neither side had a significant advantage in terms of range and hitting power for very long. So the crews quickly learned to move right and shoot, move left and shoot, move right and shoot, move left and shoot, etc. |

I've enjoyed them - you should check them out.Whereas many people here enthuse about World of Tank, but for tactical tank battles, I am really old school. The 1970's I was playing Avalon Hill's D-Day in 1975. What a great way to learn Geography and History. It also taught us concentration, patience, and the value of doing our own independent research. All of this transferred 100% to future success in life. Many of the war games mentioned in other posts here bring back memories of our small club where each member brought his or her own game every Saturday night. Old-fashioned board games were great in some ways, but they had their limits. Simulating a large sea battle such as Jutland was okay. There were some attempts back then to simulate an aerial battle. I didn't work well. The key ingredient in those old games was rolling the dice. That was because generals could not predict the individual actions of soldiers after they issued the order to send them into battle. Modern computer simulations no longer have dice rolls because you use your own eyes and your own fingers. Cratex makes some good points in responise in his post #140. |

福 In reply to: symbv Post #124 ... ryokan that is next to Miho's PzIV when it was trapped: 福本楼 ... I can see the brown building with the yellow sign 福本楼 at 12:51. I know that 福 = lucky and 楼 = building. Is it correct that "ryokan" (旅館) means "motel" ? However, the 福 character is upside down. So it is kind of like a motel in the USA having their sign say "Wotel". Another earlier post showed the real-life photo of that same building and the character 福 was right-side-up. There was a reason I never much cared for most of the Avalon Hill "Classics". ;) okanagan said: Hmm. You've provided very little context, but I think you've mistaken the ultra control over individual soldiers or first-person shooters with what a simulation of, say, the battle of Gettysburg is doing (which is the same regardless of whether it is via a board or a computer, though in this case I am not talking about the ones that give ultra-control over individual soldiers or first person shooters). That was because generals could not predict the individual actions of soldiers after they issued the order to send them into battle. Modern computer simulations no longer have dice rolls because you use your own eyes and your own fingers. Maybe that's what you want? That's fine. But, it's not real. That's why I don't play those sorts of games. The level of control they give is just as unrealistic as, say, playing a game of stratego. |

Those AH "Classic" is more like a general strategy game with some historical educational bits added. But I agree that it provides a lot of training that is beyond just history and military knowledge. I spent quite a lot of time playing AH's "Russian Campaign" when I was a young kid and I consider it time well spent. okanagan said: The key ingredient in those old games was rolling the dice. Modern computer simulations no longer have dice rolls because you use your own eyes and your own fingers. I think for " Modern computer simulations" you mean the arcade type of simulation. If you check those grand military simulation games for computer that simulates campaigns like WWII or Napoleon the computer still rolls dice (well it uses its own randomizer but you see my point). I quite like this chance element as it is the critical difference between wargame and most other strategy games where conflict resolution is always deterministic. |

So it is kind of like a motel in the USA having their sign say "Wotel". Another earlier post showed the real-life photo of that same building and the character 福 was right-side-up. GOOD OBSERVATION !! Fans in Japan have been very enthusiastic about this deliberate inverted "FUku" 福 kanji, which shows how meticulous the anime staff insert references in the anime. First, "ryokan" is a Japanese style hotel. It is not a motel. In fact many ryokan are high class and luxurious, but a local ryokan can be like the one you see here which is quite modest.Motel usually locates next to highway and provide cheap accommodation, but ryokan is usually located in tourist spot and prides itself on providing sumptuous dinner with local delicacy as the package. So they are quite different. The Inverted FUKU (which means prosperity/blessedness more than lucky) is a Chinese way to celebrate Chinese New Year, because the Chinese word for "upside down" sounds the same as "coming", so the upside-down FUKU means "Prosperity Coming" in China. What does it have to do with military then, you may ask? I have to go to Japanese forums to find the answer. And everything started with a photo taken near Kharkov in 1943 of a Tiger tank in the 2nd Panzer SS Division here: Why a German tank would have this Inverted FUKU label?? This stimulated the imagination of the mangaka Motofumi Kobayashi to come up with a manga named "Happy Tiger" in 1993 in which a Japanese soldier got separated from his troop in the Battle of Khalkhin Gol ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battles_of_Khalkhin_Gol ) at USSR border, lived his life on the nomadic plain, got drafted into Soviet Army, captured by German and later took him as a tank gun loader, and as a lucky charm he stuck an Inverted FUKU label (which he learned about when he lived in Manchuria as a soldier) on his tank. Below is the cover of the manga: Many Japanese military/tank fans do not even know this but now this manga is becoming hard to find. It is amazing how the anime staff puts in all these little details and sprinkled them around in the anime! |

There was simply no way to run around the Churchill if it did not move out of its position at the street intersection....True, but I think during the confrontation they could have run around the churchill in circles and keep firing at it more.. I believe Miho tried to kick the first shell stuck in the right of the Churchill with her second shot. The British commander sensed her intent and managed to turn its thickest part of the armor toward PzIV. The Churchill could have fired sooner but she carefully aimed at PzIV's 7.5cm cannon to neutralize its firepower for certain. For your interest, Churchill Mk.VII's front turret armor was formidable 152mm thick while that of PzIV Auf B was only 30mm! |

symbv said: Both the Mk III and the Mk IV were designed around 1935 at a time when German armor theory was very much tied to mobility, so neither were very heavily armored (both weighing in around 20 tons or so) - the Mk IV wasn't even supposed to be capable of dealing with other tanks as it's role was support, using mostly HE against soft targets. German tanks often came out on the short end when they encountered some of the heavy British and French tanks in 1940, but concentration, better tactics and communications, along with better interior design (British and French tanks often required the commander to also act as gunner AND radio operator - if they had a radio) allowed them to prevail at the critical points when it counted. Thus, though the Mk III was upgunned after the French campaign, the Mk IV wasn't even upgunned to the high velocity 75mm until after they ran into the Soviet T34 and KV 1 in the late summer/early fall of 1941 and found that even the upgunned Mk III couldn't cope with it (and the Mk III was to small to take a more powerful gun). It was really the T-34 that forced the Germans to start adding extra armor and more powerful guns, and then build those big Tigers and Panthers.I know Churchill's turret armor is thick but I don't know the difference compared to PzIV's is so big. Jaw dropped. Now, the history of British tank design before and during the war is a very painful one - it's as if they simply couldn't understand how to design and build one, never mind all the mechanical reliability issues they seemed to be unable to resolve. The Churchill, one of their better efforts, was designed after the war started and specifically designed as an infantry support tank (a concept the Germans didn't have) and thus speed was not needed but heavy armor was desired. As time went on it was up-armored and up-gunned - the one shown in this episode seems to be a later model, so in some sense it was just simply not a fair fight - the early war Mk IV really didn't have a chance. Only the more powerful gun on the Stug could have taken out the Churchill they faced. |

The light weight model the L-60 saw combat in the hands of the Hungarians who had licence build models which they named Toldi however it was no much against the Russian T-34's There medium tanks the Stridsvagn m/42 was a very modern tank for it's time however as far as i know it didn't see combat since Sweden was neutral during WW2. The question is will Sweden be represented by one of the schools so far we have only seem tanks that where used during the war excluding the Type 10 that is. So the question is is this Anime about tanks in general or tanks that where used during the war? |

They are not trying to recreate history. I don't know how deep they are going to get into the history of this world, but this is an alternative universe, similar, but different, so our history doesn't necessarily apply. Smart idea. It easily allows them to avoid the moral question of the focus on Nazi tanks :-) |
