6/10 from me as well, honestly its nothing special and it very much feels like a cheap Yotsubato! rip-off.
The main problem i have with it is that it cant decide if it wants to have a cohesive story with the whole calligraphy thing or just wants to be a laid back slice of life.
Also the whole the country side with its quirky residents is better in any possible shape or form than the city life, just makes me raise my eyebrows every single time its mentioned/implied.

Comedy is decent, but there was a much better comedy series this season (gekkan shoujo nozaki-kun ) so meh.

There's your problem.

Though there are some heart warming moments if you think about Naru's possible situation regarding her family.

I'm just glad a quirky show is getting some good attention.... I'm also glad to have been given two quirky funny shows this season

Because when a show you don't like gets popular, you start to call it overrated to justify ...anything.

Stop comparing Barakamon to Usagi Drop ffs.
They are not the same!!
Barakamon focuses on comedy and that comedy brings those warm feelings.
Usagi Drop is a josei anime about family relationships, and the interactions between the two main characters bring the warm feelings.
Understand that, and never compare those two.
Both of them are awesome, I highly recommend them.
And no, Barakamon is not overrated, it is way better than some other shiet (no examples given, because people have different tastes) that come out.

yea I don't really understand the love for it

The story lacks focus and often switches between a slice of life and a show about calligraphy. The cast are stoic for the most part but there are some funny scenes. I find the transition from comedy to serious is handled very badly. The comedy is very childish and immature in my opinion and has gradually gotten worse. The first few episodes were decent with a "moral of the story" structure but this has seemingly disappeared in favour of a predominately episodic approach focusing on a short story with no real meaning and contribution to the over arching plot which I find a bit disappointing. There has been a noticeable increase in the sexualisation of naru which I am not a fan of and I feel it weakens the main themes of the series.

I honestly think it had a lot of potential but it has been handled badly and therefore I can only give it a 5.5/10

The bigger question is, why is Usagi Drop so overrated? I found this to be a lot better. From my perspective, you're the one with strangely different taste here.

When you go into something expecting it to be similar to something else you will almost always end up in disappointment. Have you not learned that?
This anime is not overrated. Many people enjoy it and it does give you that "warm and fuzzy" feeling if you allow it too. Once you have expectations at all they can easily hinder your viewing experience. Now if you went into this without expecting anything at all I'm sure you would have liked it tremendously. Too bad for you though, this anime is inspirational and for you not to get any of that must be completely saddening.

Sexualisation of Naru? Were you drunk or something when watching this? You couldn't be further off. I'm not even going to bother with your other arguments because it's hard to take them seriously.

I thought it was a great adaptation, it really captured the peaceful mood of the island and its inhabitants, the growth of Seishuu and the humour was lighthearted and funny. Overall a really soothing anime and it's a pity some people weren't able to enjoy it. But you know, opinions and all that.

Calling it overrated amuses me because I actually think this anime deserves to be more popular than it currenly is.

How do we determine if an anime is overrated?

If alot of people have a positive opinion on an anime and you disagree does that make it overrated?

I'm actually seriously curious about this since alot of people seem to judge alot of anime as "overrated".

Most people throw overrated around as soon as they dislike an anime that is generally well liked and popular. I think it convinces them their argument is more valid that way.

Pretty much.
Another way is when your favorite show is something from several year back, and a new show of similar genre doesn't meet the exact criteria and standards they've come up with for anime, probably criteria you don't even apply to your nostalgic shows that got you into anime. If it doesn't meet your biased standards, then it's overrated shit.

It's supposed to be an adult joke, combined with the fact that the web-like fluid is a natural defense mechanism of a sea cucumber. It's also a way to keep Japanese kids from doing stuff like this (squeezing an innocent sea cucumber), by censoring it. It's like how smoking is often censored in anime, even though anyone can tell what it already is. Relevant: http://i.imgur.com/ibCO91g.png

Haters can say anything they want, but in the end their score influences an anime's rating just as much as anyone else's and as such overrated anime does not exist.

That's the same thing as saying that Naru eating a hotdog or a sucking on a popsicle is sexualasation. Stop trying to twist things to suit your argument. Even then you'd need to provide a little more evidence or instances than that, she's not/wasn't handling or looking at it in any sexual matter.

I think the same and I really don't know why people are rating this 9-10/10.
I'm not saying they can't like it but this is 6-7/10 show at best when you look at it realistically.
Maybe they haven't seen anything better?
Or they happy enough with those cheap, slapstick jokes and bit of slice-of-life that you can see in every other anime.

If you look back on ten past years for example, you would find tons of better daily life comedies then this.
The problem with young people nowadays is that their demands for good anime are pretty low and that they only look back on two past years at best. Anything older than that is history.

Barakamon wasn't really hyped though. A lot people I guess stumbled on it and found that it was a hidden gem in this pretty crappy season.

Probably same with Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun.

It gets a lot of attention in this season. This season wasn't crappy to be honest. It was better than the past few seasons, that's for sure. It's just that the other popular shows might appeal only to a few audiences (like Free! or Kuroshitsuji for instance)

Yeah I guess but not as much attention compared to some other shows.

Perhaps this season wasn't crappy. Though my season consisted of the hype monsters (Aldnoah, AKG, Mahouka) whom turned out to be crappy and three or so other shows. The only really good ones for me were Barakamon and Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun. I probably found it crappy because I haven't seen a lot of the other shows which may be good.
