Yeah its great, mostly because of the characters development and especially because the confessions (the scenes everyone is looking for in a romcom) are not over the top like Kaguya same for example. They come naturally and without much fanfare, you know, like real life but both scenes are absolutely fulfilling. Btw Kaguya manga gets a bit sh@tty after the confession, I used to love it but not anymore. In conclusion Fruits Basket will always be my favorite romance, Boku comes second, Takagi san 3rd, Kaguya 4th and Shinigami Bocchan 5th thats my top5 manga/anime.

Love is War tops. And many more ofc. This might not be great to you in any way but ofc Bokuyaba specially S2 is a example that you don't need to have that great source material. Through direction, writing, music and many more aspects of making an anime, I think it shines. It's not peak but is a great romcom indeed.
