Most of the early stuff is episodic or short arcs (2-5 episodes). Comedy is the main focus, but there's plenty of more serious arcs as well. Later seasons swap focus onto plot, but again, comedy is heavily featured.

There are some story driven arcs and those are the best parts of the series, but for the most part it is episodic comedy.

It all seems random at first, but then it starts to interconnect.
Especially in the latter arcs, The first few arcs are more like random episodes or mini arcs. Hella fun though!

Yes there's an overarching plot, in fact at a certain point it never leaves the central stage.

Yep, for sure. Gintama is one of my favorites because it pulls off comedy, drama, and action so well. The serious arcs hit harder because of the preceding comedy, imo

Mostly comedy in the beginning, serious and plot comes later. But dont think about getting to those, just enjoy the comedy. you'll miss it later

yeahh there'll be some serious arcs later and this anime hits hard cuz it gets serious real quick after ep 300

You're actually pretty close to the first big serious arc in the series. Its worth it trust me
