So, one of the genres in Viz's site says "Comedy" albeit I only see a bit of comedy here though, just serious parts for the majority of the serues.

Let's be honest here, not everyone thinks this is a comedy series despite a couple hilarious moments.

There's plenty of comedy (or attempts at comedy) in the first one, but things are a bit more serious by Shippuden, if I recall.

It has some funny moments . but it can't be considered as comedy because every shounen has some funny moments . Comedy can be a side tag .
In my opinion
Og Naruto is Action , Fantasy , Drama Shounen.

I mean, they used the Harem Jutsu in one of the last fights of the series. It's serious, sure, but it's also a comedy.

Classic series is still light hearted and some of the fillers through the 720 eps are good comic.

But show on the whole can't be a comedy. It has good dark undertones to the story, dark moments in character story etc. A great deep plot.

Calling it a Comedy in the true sense won't be correct.

95% of the comedy is just Naruto screaming or Sakura hitting Naruto, but yes, it does have comedy.

If you're considering watching Naruto just because you're looking for a comedy series then I suggest picking something else, comedy in Naruto is not the main focus. However there's definitely a bit of comedy, especially before Shippuden when Naruto is a kid and people are more carefree. There is also a Naruto spinoff which is more focused on comedy then anything else I think, I only watched some clips on YouTube and it seemed fun, here it is on MAL: https://myanimelist.net/anime/12979/Naruto_SD__Rock_Lee_no_Seishun_Full-Power_Ninden.

it's obviously not just a comedy, but the comedy is just as prevalent as the drama and even more so than the fights. If we are talking about the entire anime as a whole, pretty much all of the filler is comedy with drama mixed in. combine that with the amount of jokes already in the story and half of the series is comedy. heck, half of the serious moments are undercut by comedy. The war arc wasnt taken seriously until Madara and Obito arrived on the scene for example. So yeah, Naruto is a comedy even if it's not the primary focus of the series.

I mean any shounen especially long ones are going to have some comedy in them. would I categorize it as a comedy, no. but it does still have comedic elements from time to time.

Most modern television/movies mixes drama with comedy, most of the time in action genres. Not anime, but take Guardians of the Galaxy or Spider-Man for example.

Summary… Naruto is an onion.

It should also be mentioned that comedy being one of the genres does not indicate this is a pure comedy, just that it's a relevant aspect.

In conclusion, there's no inconsistency with comedy being one of the genre tags.

i think 90% of battle shonen can be categorize "comedy" since there are episodes ( filler or not filler )dedicated to comedy and portion of an episode have funny moments.

Naruto shippuden is more serious. So maybe shippuden can't be called "comedy".

But Naruto has episodes dedicated to comedy. ( kakashi face reveal episode . with the team 7 trying they're best to discover his face )
With Jiraya first episode hanging out around girls and onsen. And not being serious around Naruto at first ... etc etc.

With Kakashi doing the special 2 fingers in the ass.

And naruto special jujutsu always made for fun.

It tries to be funny in the earlier episodes, but it doesn't always do a good job. So no, I wouldn't call it a comedy per se.
