Technically when the dub first aired on CN/Toonami in late 2005 although I only watched a few episodes and lost interest when the Land of Waves arc started because of the slow pace; CN only aired one episode per week back then iirc. I gave it another chance about a year later, but only because the Miguzi block started airing episodes every weekday, which made it easier to follow. I didn't become a hardcore fan until early 2007 though. Back then I even watched the fillers, as much as it shames me to say.

I just started watching this anime yesterday. I read that there is a lot of friendship here, and since this is important to me, I decided to watch Naruto.
And today I saw the photo from which I made the current avatar, and now I want to watch anime even more.

I think it was in 2007, a friend of mine I met on the internet told me to watch it. Before that I didn't watch anime at all, not consciously, I've seen Princess Mononoke, A Wind Called Amnesia when I was around 5-6, some Pokemon at a friend who had RTL cable TV and it was a German dub and we didn't understand anything. It was only when I watched Yu-Gi-Oh! and Shaman King where I got hooked, but even then I don't think I knew those were animes.

It was only in 2007 when that friend showed me Naruto and told me to watch it that I became addicted to it, to anime and went through a weeb phase for about 1.5-2 years.
