NHK ni Youkuso is pretty depressing from start to finish (though it does have a good amount of funny and wholesome moments as well) but I still hold it in high regard, despite how depressed it made me feel at times :)

Generally speaking, this anime isn't the best or the most interesting anime but.. to completely answer your question i have to analyze this a bit deeper.
There are many people that watch anime in general, and there are many steps one can take to acknowledge the world of anime and the inside jokes that some (anime)shows reference from time to time.
This show is definitely an important one, almost like a checkpoint of some sort. Almost like a barrier that one must overcome to continue his journey deeper into the rabbit hole of some specific genres of anime.
If you are fascinated by the world of anime in general, and you understand that one series might have a significant impact on the future series and might've left a footprint in the anime community at the time it was released, then i think that you should definitely watch it at least for better understanding for the culture itself.

It was definitely a refreshing breath of air from a humorous and dramatic standpoint. Although for me it wasn't as sad as everyone portrays it to be. For me it was an adventure in overcoming yourself and the things that keep you from progressing in life. It was a fight within the protagonists mind. But the thing that got me was the hilarious situations. It is unique in it's own way.

this is probably the best summary. if you're not in the mood to get repeatedly punched in the feels you're going to want to save this for a time when you are.

It's really good, has a lot of co.edic moments, but it also deals with some heavy stuff sometimes.
