i've asked multiple friends and they all have contrasting answers, i wouldn't really mind learning the basics and reading more into the game (i'm very familiar with chess and given the similarities it shouldn't be too complicated), but i'm just curious as to how much i need to know prior to watching this anime. thank you

Not at all I would say, the show is more about the characters and their lives than about Shogi as a game, still the show explains stuff and if you understand certain tactics then you may get understand what they are talking about more easily, personally I watched it all without knowing a thing about Shogi or chess, and still had a phenomenal time, it's a character driven show first and foremost

not at all, no.

i've watched it numerous times and if you'd place a shogi board in front of me i'd have no idea what to do with it, i also believe this to be true for a lot of people that have watched the show and loved it.

Not really. If you don’t know then you might find the shogi bits a little boring but you can still enjoy the anime and it’s great

No, you don't.

This anime is only about shogi on a surface level. It's simply a tool to give the show a plot but it goes way deeper than that. I would say it's more akin to a beautiful story about a boy trying to overcome his depression and loneliness.

No not at all! In fact the anime gives you a brief lesson on the Shogi pieces and how they work a couple episodes in :)

No, the show focuses more on characters than shogi most of the time.
Even not knowing a thing about shogi the games were still very hype.

No. Not at all. You don't have to know the basics of shogi before watching 3 gatsu no lion.

Nah, you don’t have to. Plus they legit teach you how to play shogi in the anime. It’s pretty simple, it’s basically just chess anyway
The right mindset when watching an anime is hoping that it will break your top 10

I didn't know anything about shogi, and I loved it. I feel like the anime does a good job with explaining some of the basics. But honestly, at the heart of it, this anime is about mental health and recovery, not about shogi.

Srry for my bad engurish
No, knowing the basics of shogi could make you enjoy even more the show
The anime doesnt take a very technical aproach on the game, it focuses in the emotional part of the players, their personality and character develpment,
Just almost perfect, everyone who loves story telling and anime in general should watch it, it trully change my life

this is by far the most civilized set of replies i've received, nobody arguing, everyone having relatively homogenous answers, and for some reason nobody tried calling me out for my dumb question (no matter how reasonable your question is, there will always be someone to call you out nowadays lol), thankyou, i really mean it, definitely putting this anime on top priority

Oh, totally, if you want to expose the MCs weak play you should at least reach master level before watching.
