Just finished Akira.I understood that Akira decided to do something to Tetsuo to stop him from mutating any further. So,all that explosion stuff happens. The doctor even mentions the forming of a universe. And as the end credits role,we hear "I am Tetsuo" and see a swirl of galaxies and stars. So,did Tetsuo eventually evolve into a universe?

Bruh, if you want to get more into the story and get a better idea of the ending I would recommend you to read the manga. The film is amazing but the story is so much bigger and better on the manga (including Tetsuo’s ending), so yeah you should read it’s amazing.

To my understanding the ending of the movie is intentionally ambiguous because author and director Katsuhiro Otomo wasn’t finished making his manga yet (manga 1982-1990, movie 1988). The final few minutes or so is a movie original ending. Despite stitching events of the manga out of order and leaving a lot out, the movie delivers it’s own impressive direction thanks to Otomo’s involvement.
