Yes but there will be some things you won’t understand. It’s a seperate story to the original series but you’ll benefit from watching season 1.

For an outside anime watcher this movie is probably even better start to the series, because it is less ecchi-heavy. However I guess it wont have that much impact on you if you watch it that way. I have just finished and I absolutely loved it!

It's arguable that if you haven't watched NGNL yet, that you should watch this first. (There's pros and cons to doing either).

Essentially this is set far in the past from the NGNL series' storyline. It helps to world-build, and is briefly mentioned as a passing past-reference during the NGNL series.

So honestly, do either. If I hadn't seen NGNL yet, I'd watch NGNLZ first. But that's just me.

I would rather watch the series first than movie first. That said, it doesn't really matter really. Watching the series would help you appreciate the heavier mood of the movie more, but movie itself doesn't really have many references to the series

Yes you can, but you will miss the best thing of it, it explains almost everything about that anime.
For me, I have watched the first season before, then watched this movie, I think what makes this movie amazing that it explains what happens in the anime.
So I recommend you to watch the season one first then the movie.

I guess you could, it won't be as satisfying and good though since it explains a lot about the original series. I recommend watching the original NGNL first.

The sad part is that to understand it better and get the better picture of it, it is reccomended to watch the show, which is terrible.

So it's a trade-off. You can't have everything.

That's retarded! I would you want to do that? Always watch the stuff from the release data, not chronologically...
