I haven't read the Fairy Tail manga so I was just wondering if it's okay to watch the movie as in knowing what is going on because looking at the trailer it seems to be like a final arc type thing.

I wouldn't recommend for anyone who doesn't know anything that happened in the manga (at least in the Avatar arc) to watch this movie since you'd be spoiled at some key points of some characters' power-ups/new abilities.
It's not a "final arc" as it seems to be set between the final two arcs of the series: Avatar and Alvarez Empire (the post-credits scene gave it away).
If you're patient enough, wait for the 2018 TV series to start and then, after the Avatar arc ends (should be over either in one or two cours), watch Dragon Cry.

Okay, for those who were waiting to know when to watch Dragon Cry, it's settled! If you have seen the 2018 TV series until episode 7 (or episode 284 overall), you can watch the movie!

I think watching in order of media release (in Japanese date) is also fine too. You finished Fairy Tail 2014 and watch OVA7-9 (9 also has mild spoiler) and then watch Dragon Cry and finish with Final Series. I think some of the early spoilers in Dragon Cry is intentional and is treated as 'element of surprise' for anime-only fans.
