Ok so I know Little Buster lovers are dedicated so hear me out before you start torching my house... I pretty much hated the 1 season of Little Busters. I have no idea why, considering I loved stories with similar plots (haruhi, clannad, kokoro connect, etc.). Its been quite some time since I choked down the first installment, but I've heard such raving reviews about Refrain that I feel obligated to watch it.

I remember the gist of most of the main characters, would a brief synopsis review suffice before I watch Refrain? How much of the original story do I need to recall to follow along?

Pretty much nothing but the characters. It's somewhat similar to Clannad, where the first season is a little all over the place but the plot starts to get more focused on the second one. I found Refrain considerably better than the first season (like Clannad) and in general I recommend it 100%, but since you didn't like the first season I'm not sure, as I liked it from the begining.

But give it a try it's only 12 episodes and in my opinion it's really good, specially compared to the first season.

Pd: Sorry if what I said is a bit general, but I deliberately didn't want to go on details because reasons

Absolutely fine, I agree with @Ruffette. Refrain is far better than Season 1. In fact, without spoiling it, not watching Refrain after suffering through some of season 1 should be a crime. I only enjoy season 1 now because of Refrain. There is genuinely a big difference between the two seasons as the first is more slice of life whereas Refrain is heavily plot focused.

Refrain is worth watching even if your memory is a bit vague, as long as you remember the relationships between the characters then you should be fine. The reason is that you should at minimum know how the characters feel for each other. This helps enhance Refrain.
