I want to like Barakamon, but the characters and jokes feel too juvenile half the time.

Its not overrated! unfortunately, maybe this show is not meant for you... And if you didn't liked this show then I'm sure you won't like other SOL comedy shows.
And there are many people who like this show which also includes me.

I think this show has some good things going, but it's WAAAAY too heavy on slapstick.. Kinda ruined the entire show for me, how it constantly undermines itself with cliched physical comedy or "embarrass the MC" jokes. In general most of the characters are played way too wacky most of the time (Sei is too wimpy and hysterical, Tama is too crazy, Miwa is too casual, Kazu is too annoying and Sei's mother is like a sexist 19th century caricature a of woman with hysteria..)

This show is like March Comes in like a Lion, but worse in every way, which is a shame because I actually wanted to love it!

'Barakamon' is not overrated, but a very good anime series where children act like children, not adults -- Naru is sweet and proper as a character --; besides this, a good Slice of Life story with very good characters and good art, animation, music and sound effects.
