HIGURASHI IS OVERRATED!!

Information
I don't know, maybe I'm the only one who thinks the lame so called thriller anime Higurashi is one of the most overrated animes since Naruto. With it's crappy repetitive arcs, lousy art work, and lack of anything that could constitute a horror/thriller. This is a club for those that were disgruntled to find out this supposedly amazing anime turned out to be a slice of life in which people get killed, over and over and over again. I look forward to the angry mobs, get out the pitchforks and torches because you have some menacing to do!

While I agree this show is overrated, I still enjoyed it, and I especially enjoyed season two. I wasn't really expecting the plot to actually make sense in the end, I figured the entire show was just a series of different mystery stories composing the same characters. The fact that season two did manage to mend everything together was awesome and greatly enjoyed by me.
The fact that a club like this even exists surprises me greatly. I totally thought Higurashi was one of the best animes ever made after watching it. Clearly not everybody agrees. :P

but the sad part or the most annoying part is even if you say that do the higurashi they'll just say you're too dumb to comprehend the deepness of the show. you'll say to them i found the first 6 eps boring as fuck, should i keep watching? they'll say yeah, it's the like best anime ever. I mean I have my favorites but if the person didn't feel that anime by a certain ep i would just tell them "oh i guess we have different tastes". higruashi fans are so pretentious

Higurashi is one of those shows loved by a lot of those typical teenagers who either:

a) Love laughing at how crazy bloody it is, and use it's juxtaposition of cuteness and gore as a defense for how brilliant it is because, "Oh my god, man, it's cute, but, like, it's DARK too!" These are the types who act like series like Bebop and Evangelion are overrated because they're not "dark" enough.

b) Who love cute girls, but are total violence freaks who obsessively play violent video games and are secretly violent sociopathes.

Not to type, but I speak from experience: every Higurarshi fan I have ever met falls into these two categories, and it really goes to show who this show's target audience was. It's a cheap excuse for a slasher anime, veiled under a thin layer of pretentious "drama" and "emotion" conveyed by incredibly boring dialogue and characters. It's fandom reminds me a good bit of "Highschool of the Dead", who defend the boob-laden, gore-infested tripefest with arguments of it being "different", "deep" or "dark." It isn't any of those things, and neither is Higurashi. It's an exploitative, contrived series that relies on baser emotions to convey any "point" it may have underneath the several, several layers of crap that it consists of.

*phew* Sorry, I've been holding that in for years. Thanks for this group, I needed it!

I joined. It's not because I mask some hidden Higurashi hatred. I really liked the series. (Probably less than I rated it in my review, but eh... I'm not going back to fix it.)

Objectively, yes. It really isn't brilliant. I'd say it's better than your run-of-the-mill cash cow anime, but that's all I'll give it. It isn't the greatest thing ever- there are many things that are better than this. And it does push away a lot of people with its repetition.

However, I won't say it isn't worth checking out. It's become a severe love-hate anime that polarizes fans and critics, as you can see here.

I think the fans need to get a grip. I loved Higurashi because I happened to love it and it was one of my first anime, but all fans- Higurashi entirely- seem to push the anime they "enjoyed" as critical deities, and that's not what Higurashi is.
It's a fairly unique anime that suffers in execution at times, and that loses more fans than it gains with its slow pacing.

So yes. This anime is over-rated by its fans, but because of the extremely different reactions it solicits among viewers, I'm not going to say it isn't worth it to take a peek and form your own opinion.

I agree with Kitchaa.

However, there's something that is missed by a lot of people. Higurashi was Ryukishi's first attempt at a 'murder mystery', and it soon proved to have a snowball's chance in hell at being one.
I'm not talking about the anime. I'm talking about the visual novels here.

A lot of people dislike it because they have only seen the first two episodes of Higurashi, or perhaps the first arc.
I'll admit, even though I'm a Higurashi fan, that the series itself is not very great at all. There was no way in hell that Hinamizawa Syndrome as the reason for these murders was foreshadowed- as a matter of fact, the needle and drug issues in Onikakushi-hen served as some of the only foreshadowing.
For a murder mystery to be good, the reader must have the same amount of chance of figuring out what the true cause is as the detective.

If anything, Ryu should've elaborated on Satoko and Rika and their issue with the Irie institution way back during the question arcs.

But he didn't, of course.

What bugs me the most is the number of ... preteens seems to be the major group here - the number of preteens who worship and regard this show as TEH BEST ANIME EVER - the deepest and most psychologically thrilling one of all.

Please. Go watch The Human Centipede, then get back to Higurashi [Don't forget to read up on Irie's lobotomy fun as well when you get back 9v9]

There's also the fact that the anime adaption was downright TERRIBLE. I recall reading the novel and comparing it to the anime and being utterly disappointed at how much they left out.

(As the #1 Irie fangirl, I was most disappointed to see that they skipped over Irie's past completely. Now everyone STILL thinks he's just a pedo doctor [WHICH ISN'T EVEN TRUE IN ITSELF?!] and is one of the only sane ones [lobotomies lobotomies] other than Rika and Mion. )

The series also makes use of generic characterization, overabusing cute character traits and speech phrases ("Hauuu!" "Kaiii!" "Omochikaeri!!" "Uso da!" "Kana, kana!" "Mii" "Nipah!" "Nano desu" [take note that over half of these are Rena's] ) -- this could have been avoided, but I suppose it was another way to get the series to sell better. Honestly, I can't come up with any decent analyzation.

Either way. This series is in no way the best, and although many seem to think it as 'overrated' for the anime itself, it's mostly because of it's incompetence as a murder mystery.

TBH, I didn' t like the anime, but the visual novel I absolutely loved. Everything in the anime just didn't give the thrill it gave me in the manga....
