Synopsis

While at school, Mai Taniyama and her friends like to exchange ghost stories. Apparently, there is an abandoned school building on their campus that is the center of many ghost stories. During the story, they are interrupted by a mysterious male figure. The person turns out to be Kazuya Shibuya, a 17-year-old who is president of the Shibuya Psychic Research Company. He was called by the principal to investigate the stories surrounding the abandoned school building.

The next day, on the way to school, Mai passes the school building in question. While examining a strange camera she spotted inside, she gets surprised by Kazuya's assistant. Unknowingly interfering with the investigation, Mai breaks the camera and Kazuya's assistant gets injured.

Kazuya forcefully hires Mai in order to pay for the camera and replace his injured assistant. From that point on, Mai begins to learn about the paranormal world and the profession of ghost hunting.

Ghost Hunt blends elements of mystery, suspense, and a touch of romance into a rather unique anime that does not live up to the expectations of the horror genre. There are many problems with the series from the lack of horror elements, the below-average animation, the lack of substantial character development beyond the main protagonist. But the anime just works. The lack of horror makes for an easy viewing experience, the grounded animation leads to a heightened sense of vulnerability among the characters in their encounters with the supernatural. And while other characters lack any kind of growth, it makes Mai’s transformation episode to episode ...

Mixed Feelings
There is two ways to look at Ghost Hunt, you can watch it and judge it by what it is, a rather average comedy anime about ghost hunting with little to no suspense, or watch the whole thing expecting to find "horror" just to get dissapointed by finding out scooby doo features more horror than this.

This anime also features the most boring opening I have seen in my life, characters that lack any sort of charm, development or emotion, predictable cases, and best of all, it it ends with a cliffhanger.

If you were looking for comedy and some suspense, feel free to watch it, if ...

Congratulations to Ghost Hunt, for being the first show to score less than a 5 with me.

Actually to be fair, my rating for it was originally a 5. But then I saw Nekopara, and it became my new standard for as middle of the road as you can get. After reviewing that, I realized (I think I always knew, but I don't like being overly harsh with my reviews) that this show deserved a lower rating.

Because while I saw it awhile ago, it sticks out in my mind for all the wrong reasons.

To the show's credit, it definitely has some neat ideas and settings, and ...
