Dealing extensively with the concept of adolescents about friendship, attachment, and intimacy as they deal with angst, grudges, and confrontation with one another. The distinctions are in the ambiance, atmosphere, and concepts used. I think both can give the same feelings of grief or sorrow as both have a heavy dramatic premise.

Heartbreaking romantic series. Both series are very similar. Both have main character that found themselves a spirit / ghost. They also face lots of common themes, such as impossible love between human and spirit.

Two stories about a certain person dealing with the lost of their love. While AnoHana focus on a group of friends, Hal focus in just a couple. Heart breaking scenes where main characters just seems to have lost the will to live. Both shows have a stunning animation, with a beautiful and touching OST. A must watch for persons who enjoy angst.
