Classic 20th-century series and films that most old-school otaku have heard of and many older fans will cite as the reason they became a life-long weeb in the first place. Some have gotten sequels or modern reboots, while others have been relegated to the past and stand alone as fondly-remembered products of their time. If you want to take a journey through anime history, these shows are the place to start!

Criteria for this list: Were popular or well-known at some point during the 20th century, or were based on well-known source material of the time.

a compilation of anime you could convince your friends to watch, anime that doesn't even look like anime, or anime you grew up with because the concept of anime didn't exist yet. push your friends to watch (or admit they watched) anime :D

Anime aired in Spain's TV channels (public or private), listed with the Spanish title. Might be missing some or be messy: I wanted to add the most important but also the less obvious. Excluding most sequels & movies.

Anime that aired in Britain on TV. Does not include streaming, home release, etc. Some air dates are included.


My source for some of these is through word of mouth or archived forum posts so if there are any inaccuracies I apologize. As a rule of thumb if an air date is included it means the show definitely aired.

In 2012, The Asahi Shimbun announced the 104 TV anime that they considered to be the most representative and memorable of all TV anime between 1963 and 2012. It's a good starting point for exploring general TV anime history, and the shows are all worth giving a shot. The list was not ranked, and ordered by release date.

50 different series from 50 different years. While most of these are my favorites from year to year, I have included some I thought should get a bit more of a spotlight on. It actually took me a lot longer to put this list together than I thought it would, some years had a lot of good picks and it was hard to pick out either a favorite or one that should be highlighted.

Note there are a few years I have not seen a show from (a few years from the 70s) so I will add some from my PTW or that were impactful.
