Very stylized action sequences. Both are samurai themed. Each has a very serious samurai as well as a more laid back, energetic samurai.

another great ninja/samurai full of action anime

Sword wielding badass and a lot of blood.
report Recommended by Lucek
They both have samurai fighting each other. And the gore seems to be equall in both camps. Shigurui is a bit slower but it does have over 200% more episodes than Afro Samurai

Afro and Hellsing both have great action and lots of blood/gore and not to mention beautiful artwork. While Afro Samurai is a pretty good action anime, Hellsing Ultimate has a much better storyline.

Claymore follows a group of emotionally nulled women; violence, blood, gore, honor, and superhuman abilities cause an exceptional amount of reactions from viewers. Both stories have similarities not only among weapons, but revenge, hatred, and a strange moral agreement between the authors. Hidden symbolism plague both stories, teasing that not only increases heart rates but emotions of shock and disturbance. Don't close your eyes for these series, missing a moment of gore, means more than just a passing moment of disgust.
report Recommended by CiaoBella
Both have intense, brilliantly choreographed, and lavishly animated swordfights and stories that explore themes such as vengeance and the morality of killing. In stark contrast to RuroKen's quiet, contemplative and sentimental tone, however, Afro Samurai is rife with energy, black comedy (in more ways than one), and an overall pop-culture vibe. Where RuroKen's story and presentation can be described as "beautiful", Afro Samurai's would be more accurately described as "badass".

Ninja scroll and afro samurai are similar in terms of the bloodshed.. and samurai swording.

When you have a bloody past and the world around you is nothing but cruel, the only thing that remains to you is KILL. P.S. Not for fainthearted :D

samurai stories are the best, and these two are some of the best samurai stories
report Recommended by Classicola
Both are vengeance themed stories focusing on samurai type characters and share settings that mix in feudal and modern japan like aesthetics as well too.
report Recommended by Disapeared_Ghost
The stars are both black samurai and the setting is rooted in feudal Japanese culture but spiced with plenty of exaggerations. They only have a handful of episodes each that equate roughly to movie length. What the two anime have in common most of all is the fact that they both released an English version as their primary dub. If you enjoy anime in English and dig the samurai aesthetic - but don't mind some creative liberties - Afro Samurai and Yasuke have got you covered.

Same samurai and ninja stuff but Basilisk got more story than Afro Samurai which is pure action
report Recommended by ymg414
Afro Samurai has same focus as Dororo. Obviously it's samurais. >w< While Afro is more dark sided, not like Dororo isn't, in sense that Afro has no demons and evil spirits it's more focused on reality that Dororo. UwU

Samurai, stylized animation and rap soundtrack - those two anime have a very similar atmosphere and feel.
report Recommended by abystoma2
Protagonist is an angry avenger, the aim is to beat who killed the own father. The protagonist mainly uses a melee weapon against many enemies. Really epic fights, in a show where almost all are against the protagonist, who have mainly just one weak friend.
report Recommended by Disillusion
Both have the same kind of plot where someone kills the main characters mother/father and the main character sets out to get revenge.
report Recommended by Deer50
The animation in both series is very similar. Also, both anime are initially focused on the Western audience.
report Recommended by Gucha07
Well to be honest I have only watched one episode. It was about how they met their counterpart members from the past. I cracked up the whole episode when it turned out that they were all black! 10/10 without doubt.
report Recommended by BigHeadMo
Met through television, a music channel xD he resolved to pass the time along with the Afro Samurai, Sunabouzu is great for anyone who loves good old action! His story is very good as well as the characters, in which each brand with your way, which can be corny and even ridiculous depending on what is seen: 3 One of the remarkable things this anime would be taken in earnest comedy, creating a great show of bullets and ass off xD
report Recommended by NatsuIkeda
If you like a series were characters can be serious while having characters that aren't as serious then I think that you would enjoy this.

Story about badass samurai with western influences.
report Recommended by abystoma2
They are both about going on a journey to find something, Katanagatari being the 12 Swords and Afro Samurai being the Headbands. Both involve a lot of incredible action scenes. However Afro Samurai has a lot less dialogue than Katanagatari. And it is much more blood and gore ridden. Plus Samuel L. Jackson, I mean come on.

Do you LOVE to be hyped while watching awesome somewhat realistic martial arts and such? Do you feel like you wanna jump right out and kick some thugs arses?... Well both series will indeed provide you with that feeling. Both being in totally completely different settings and artstyle but they still have really awesome fights and both being dark, but of course Afro Samurai being more darker because of no comedy(or only dark comedy) while Air Master still have some more lighthearted comedy.
report Recommended by ProfaneValkyrie
Both series focus on a skilled warrior haunted by their past on the bloody path of revenge. The brutal combat and graphic violence don't let up in either story, and both blend ancient fighting styles with modern/futuristic technology. If you like watching a man fight like a demon, then you'll appreciate Ninja Kamui and Afro Samurai.
report Recommended by audioaddict13
Both are focused on loner brooding mcs with alot of stylish action, visuals and are determined to make it to the end as well as a striking artstyle.
report Recommended by Disapeared_Ghost
Afro Samurai is essentially just a meme. It's got great action and visuals, and that's about it. It's not well-written and the characters are not good, which is pretty similar to Inuyashiki. It's still fun to watch throughout, what with the gore and stupidity flying everywhere. Like Inuyashiki, Afro Samurai is also like a worse version of Hellsing Ultimate in that regard.
report Recommended by wtwwmjjat
Both stories contain action, gore moments.Main characters for these two shows has to go though a lot of sufferings from both physically and mentally.
report Recommended by RoyalKnights13
It is the seocnd season wrapped in a whole movie.
report Recommended by Bankgzz
Both mc's have a goal which the whole anime is based on, which is getting revenge by finding and killing the people who killed their parent(s).
report Recommended by veravv
If you liked baki you'll love afro samurai, the choreographies are very good just like in baki, both have pretty linear plots , both protagonists are cold and both animes have a sex scene. Afro samurai is more violent and adult but i don't think that's not a problem.
report Recommended by Brunilde
Shorter anime series that caricature an existing genre (samurai/secret agent) by dialing up the absurdity and character-quirks. The stories revolve around a chase for a coveted object that the protagonist is especially interested in, and ends up fighting against a range of enemies who have ridiculous but powerful weapons/abilities.
report Recommended by Eziprez
both are revenge themed stories with a quiet mc in it as well too.
report Recommended by Disapeared_Ghost
Action-oriented series with a black protagonist who is talented in sword combat. Both Afro and Blade are hunting the person responsible for the death of a family member. They also carry a special memento that will eventually be helpful during their quest.
report Recommended by NaughtyNoddy
Very cool and gore-y fight scenes. Both plots are very similar and share the "vengeance" theme.
report Recommended by himariaiko
Afro samurai shows a single character fighting the world. After a length of time, he gains people around him.
report Recommended by Chotoot
Don't know if it counts as spoiler but as far as the Tv series goes, -The main character is on a quest to seek revenge on a person -They are tormented and have psychological damage -They wield blades/katanas
report Recommended by Dreddpaul
so much great action in both anime / the main character is too strong / both are short anime both main characters have sad past.
report Recommended by take-off
They both have good plots and decent endings, the main characters also have something in common in that they both have a painful/sad past. There is quite a difference between the shows at the start (Trigun having comedy) but as they progress you should notice the similarities. All in all, these are some decent show's which shouldn't be over-looked in the slightest.

Gory action, power and revenge, hip-hop/rap soundtrack.
report Recommended by lisnoire
Both short, insane and stylish animes. They both have a cool feel about them.
report Recommended by kan-san
They both have awesome sword fights and are GAR In fact, Afro Samurai is even better since it has a normal plot line and a black dude as the main character. <3 Ichigo
report Recommended by Jizzy2007
Both these series are based on ninjas, assassinations and the way of the warrior.
report Recommended by arimakenshin
Both of the series have lots of action in it.
report Recommended by NejiHyugaNL
Afro Samurai too is about a story of revenge. They are both pretty violent but Highlander lacks the intensity of the swordfights and can't get even close to the eye-catching style Afro Samurai got. Both shows are originally dubbed in English but while AFs voice acting is convincing and well done Highlanders sounds dull and artificial.
report Recommended by dared
If you love fighting, cyborgs, profanity, and an amply-bosomed young woman in the storyline, these'll both do just fine.

Onimusha and Afro Samurai are samurai anime from creators outside of the medium who bring their own artistic quality to the genre. Onimusha is based on a video game series by Capcom and this adaptation is directed by Takashi Miike who is a Japanese film director, film producer and screenwriter known for several extreme violent films. Afro Samurai is based on a doujinshi from a creator with strong American influences and the adaptation became a collaboration between Samuel L. Jackson, Studio Gonzo, the doujinshi creator, and RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan. Viewers who can appreciate these outside influences are the ones who will enjoy these  read more

Raizou (Revenger) and Afro (Afro Samurai) are pursuing revenge against those who have caused the death of their love ones. Afro is willing to kill anyone that stands against him or blocks his path. Raizou is an honourable individual who feels conflicted about what has happened to him despite wanting to revenge. Revenger tries to introduce more nuance and complexity compared to Afro Samurai, which is satisfied with pure violence and action. Both series have a different approach to a samurai anime so that should help to keep your attention.

Taciturn, serious and determined main characters, in a very dark plot, who are pretty strong in fights and they use just a simple sword. Both have heavy violence, blood and gore.
report Recommended by Disillusion
Both are among the most violent anime of all times, with extremely high level of blood, gore and shocking and dreadful kills. Main characters are powerful just using a sword and they are merciless with their enemies, but they stil pretty good inside.
report Recommended by Disillusion
Both shows have ninja's, deadly villains & battles. Both have great world building, character designs and art styles. Both have historical influence and unique looks. Both have 10/10 OST's.
report Recommended by JVskunkape
Both series with all round great soundtracks and music, very unique sound to them which are one of the strongest aspects for both series. Both have great art styles & characters. Both have great character designs. Both have their main character aiming for the top place (#1 spot).
report Recommended by JVskunkape
-Both shows feature ninja & samurai. -Both have historical influence. -Both have iconic soundtracks that stand out as original. -Both have super natural aspects. -Both have epic battle/fight scenes.
report Recommended by JVskunkape
Both shows are great examples of positive representation of black people & culture in anime. Both main characters have amazing hair & are rugged and formidable. Both have original and unique soundtracks as well as great world building, art styles and character designs.
report Recommended by JVskunkape
Both have simplistic fighting scenes, which really do show that you do not need over the top super powers or special effects to make a good anime. The more basic animation doesn't make it less enjoyable to watch but retains fluidity when the action starts.
report Recommended by Rizzles
Well, both Lucy and Afro have their past, very sad and disturbing.Level of violence, gore, blood, and sex/nudity is about the same (maybe "Afro Samurai" has a bit less gore but surely more nudity than "Elfen Lied").Both Lucy and Afro are merciless and brutal against their enemies. Some say that "Afro Samurai" is based on fight, and "Elfen Lied" on relationship.Trust me,Afro had relationship problem.Though he has more action than "Elfen Lied".
report Recommended by Shok
Tales of bloody hardship and pain. Gory paths await our heroes, in order to reach their final goal. They are chased by powerful enemies, then their ways are full of villains, cruelty and death.
report Recommended by Disillusion
Afro Samurai and Gungrave are action-packed anime that feature strong main characters that are carving their bloody paths to nothing but vengeance and retribution. They are rather quiet and do not tend to think too much because their goals remain the same throughout the whole series, while fighting with horrific malformed monstrosities around them. Both series have really great endings and somewhat similar animation that leave you screaming for nothing but more. If you liked watching one of them you shouldn't hesitate to try out the other.
report Recommended by FireHeart
Afro Samurai and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust are action anime that don't really lay an unnecessarily large focus on their stories and characterization, but decide to please the audience with beautiful and occasionally stunning animation as well as visually innovative battle sequences. Sword-wielding and silent-but-deadly protagonists that enter some stupendous fights are also a shared phenomena in both series. If you liked watching one of the shows I highly recommend trying out the other one as well.
